Switch Lite 2
Nintendo's Priority Should Be the Switch Lite 2, Not Another OLED Model
Recent gaming rumors have once again suggested that Nintendo may be planning a new Nintendo Switch OLED 2 model. While another OLED-equipped version would certainly attract attention, there is a strong argument that Nintendo's real priority should be something else: the long-awaited Switch Lite 2.
The reason is simple. The Nintendo Switch 2 delivers a major upgrade in performance, display size, and overall hardware capabilities, but those improvements have also made the system noticeably larger and heavier. For players who primarily use their consoles in handheld mode, the Switch 2 can feel cumbersome during extended gaming sessions.
This is exactly where a Switch Lite 2 could fill an important gap in Nintendo's product lineup.
The original Switch Lite became popular not simply because it was cheaper than the standard Switch, but because it offered a completely different handheld experience. By eliminating detachable Joy-Con controllers and TV-mode functionality, Nintendo was able to create a smaller, lighter, and more compact system that was much more comfortable to carry around.
A Switch Lite 2 could follow exactly the same philosophy.
Nintendo would not necessarily need to make the Lite 2 as powerful or feature-packed as the standard Switch 2. Instead, the company could focus on creating a compact all-in-one handheld that retains compatibility with Switch 2 games while reducing the size and weight of the hardware.
For players who never connect their console to a television and have no interest in detachable Joy-Con controllers, such a device could actually be a better fit than the standard Switch 2.
The Lite 2 could also play an important role in expanding Nintendo's next-generation user base.
The Switch 2 is increasingly positioned as a higher-performance gaming system, but a smaller and potentially more affordable Lite model could lower the barrier to entering Nintendo's new hardware generation. This would be particularly attractive to existing Switch owners who already have large game libraries but want to upgrade to the new platform without necessarily paying for hardware features they do not need.
Then there is another major advantage: color options.
One of the original Switch Lite's most recognizable features was its range of bright and distinctive colors. Nintendo has always understood the appeal of hardware customization, and a Switch Lite 2 could take this even further with multiple colors and special editions based on franchises such as Pokémon, Super Mario, and The Legend of Zelda.
Limited-edition Lite 2 consoles could become highly desirable collector's items while simultaneously giving Nintendo another opportunity to generate hardware sales.
This is why many players may ultimately want something different from another premium OLED model. They are not necessarily asking for a bigger or sharper screen. They want a system that is smaller, lighter, and more comfortable to hold.
That does not mean an OLED model would have no market. A higher-quality OLED display would certainly appeal to players who prioritize image quality and visual presentation. However, if Nintendo had to choose which new hardware variant should receive priority, the Switch Lite 2 could arguably have greater strategic value.
The two products would serve completely different audiences.
The standard Switch 2 could focus on performance and premium features, while the Lite 2 could focus on portability and handheld comfort. Rather than competing directly with each other, they could form a more complete hardware lineup.
Nintendo therefore has an obvious opportunity. Instead of simply making the Switch 2 screen better, the company could rethink what a next-generation Nintendo handheld should actually feel like.
For many players, the most important upgrade is not a larger display. It is a smaller, lighter, and more comfortable console.
If Nintendo can combine that design philosophy with strong battery life, attractive colors, reasonable pricing, and full compatibility with the Switch 2 software library, the Switch Lite 2 could potentially become the most appealing "second console" in the entire Switch 2 family.
