Detective Conan: Over 30 Years of Mystery, an Expanding Main Story, and a Franchise That Keeps Growing

Detective Conan has been serialized since 1994, meaning the series has now been running for more than 30 years. The protagonist, high school detective Shinichi Kudo, was transformed into a child after being forced to take the experimental drug APTX 4869 and has continued living under the identity of the elementary school student Conan Edogawa ever since. One of the franchise's longest-running jokes is that people have spent decades saying, "I'll get married when Shinichi turns back." In reality, some of the readers who made that joke have already married and raised children who are now in elementary school—while Conan himself is still in first grade.

Yet that apparent lack of aging represents one of the greatest commercial strengths of Detective Conan. The character has remained permanently recognizable while the audience has changed across multiple generations. What began as a popular mystery manga has developed into one of Japan's longest-running and most commercially successful anime franchises.

The year 2026 is particularly significant because the series' long-running main storyline is gradually moving into a more critical phase. The Black Organization, Rum, the Akai family, APTX 4869, and the secrets surrounding Shinichi and Ai Haibara have increasingly become interconnected. Among the most important figures is Rum, the Black Organization's No. 2. His true identity has already been established as Kanenori Wakita, the sushi chef working at Iroha Sushi in Beika.

What makes Rum particularly threatening is not simply his physical ability, but the enormous amount of information available to him. His investigation has brought the Black Organization increasingly close to the secrets surrounding APTX 4869 and the identities of those who survived its effects. For Conan and Haibara, this represents one of the most dangerous developments in the entire series.

Conan's greatest advantage has always been his ability to conceal his true identity while investigating the Black Organization from the shadows. Haibara has similarly survived by hiding her former identity as Shiho Miyano. But as the Organization continues to gather information, the connection between APTX 4869, Shinichi Kudo, and Haibara is becoming increasingly difficult to conceal. If the Organization were to definitively establish that Conan is actually Shinichi, the decades-long battle between Conan and the Black Organization could enter an entirely new phase.

The remarkable structure of Detective Conan is that the series does not rely entirely on its main storyline. Gosho Aoyama has spent decades balancing two different types of storytelling: standalone mystery cases that allow viewers to enjoy individual investigations, and a much larger storyline involving the Black Organization and Conan's true identity. This structure has allowed the series to remain accessible to casual viewers while rewarding longtime fans with major revelations every time the main plot advances.

At the same time, the theatrical films have become one of the most important engines behind the franchise's commercial success. When the first Detective Conan movie was released in 1997, the films were essentially theatrical extensions of a successful television anime. Nearly three decades later, the movies have become a major annual event in Japan's animation market.

The evolution of the films has been particularly important. Early installments focused more heavily on traditional detective mysteries, while modern entries increasingly combine mystery with large-scale action, explosions, police drama, character relationships, and spectacular set pieces. Popular characters such as Shuichi Akai, Toru Amuro, Heiji Hattori, Kaito Kid, and Ai Haibara have also been given major roles in different films, allowing different segments of the fan base to find their own reason to return to theaters every year.

This transformation has significantly expanded the commercial appeal of the franchise. Audiences no longer watch a Detective Conan movie solely to solve a mystery. They also come for the characters, action sequences, emotional relationships, major confrontations, and connections to the broader Conan universe. The theatrical series has therefore evolved from a conventional mystery-anime spin-off into an annual entertainment event.

The difference between the first theatrical film in 1997 and the modern movies is especially striking. The franchise has moved from relatively modest theatrical releases to films capable of becoming major events in Japan's box office calendar. The continued success of the movies demonstrates that Detective Conan is no longer simply a manga or television anime. It has become a multimedia entertainment brand encompassing manga, television animation, films, merchandise, music, collaborations, and large-scale promotional campaigns.

Gosho Aoyama's comments regarding the eventual ending of the series have also generated enormous interest. Fans naturally want to know when Conan will finally return to being Shinichi Kudo. However, claims that the "entire ending has already been drawn" should be distinguished from the idea that Aoyama has already planned or conceptualized the final conclusion. The existence of a planned ending does not necessarily mean that every final chapter has already been completed.

What is clear is that the eventual conclusion will have to resolve some of the longest-running mysteries in modern manga: the fate of the Black Organization, the consequences of APTX 4869, Shinichi's return to his original identity, Haibara's future, and the relationship between Shinichi and Ran Mouri. These unresolved elements represent the culmination of more than three decades of storytelling.

The truly extraordinary achievement of Detective Conan is therefore not simply that Conan has failed to grow up for more than 30 years. It is that the character has remained commercially relevant while his audience has changed several times over. Someone who watched the first theatrical film as a child in 1997 could now be an adult with children of their own, potentially introducing the next generation to the same character.

Conan has remained in first grade, but the franchise itself has continued to evolve.

That makes the joke that "Conan didn't grow up—he just got better at making money" surprisingly accurate. Over more than three decades, Detective Conan has transformed from a popular mystery manga into a massive entertainment franchise with extraordinary cross-generational appeal.

And as the Black Organization storyline moves closer to its eventual conclusion, the biggest question is no longer simply when Conan will become Shinichi again. The real question is how Gosho Aoyama will finally resolve a mystery that has captivated audiences for more than 30 years—and whether the ending will be powerful enough to close one of the longest-running stories in modern Japanese popular culture.
