(False Designation of Origin)
A major legal controversy is making waves across the global gaming industry—Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has officially filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accusing Tencent of heavily copying its iconic Horizon series in the Chinese tech giant’s upcoming game, “Light of Motiram.” The case raises not only questions about creative similarity, but also fundamental concerns about the boundaries and enforcement of intellectual property rights in the modern entertainment industry.
According to Reuters and multiple media outlets, Sony describes Light of Motiram in its legal filing as a “slavish clone” of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. The core gameplay mechanics, narrative structure, character design, visual art style, environmental settings, UI fonts, and even marketing assets are said to be strikingly similar. Both games place players in a post-apocalyptic world ruled by mechanical creatures, with a red-haired female protagonist exploring wild, overgrown landscapes—a premise that mirrors Horizon almost identically.
One particularly notable point in Sony’s complaint is the timeline of development. Sony alleges that Tencent began developing the game as early as 2023, and even approached Sony at the 2024 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in an attempt to license the Horizon IP. Tencent reportedly presented a pitch that included concept art of a red-haired protagonist standing on the Great Wall of China—an effort to merge Eastern aesthetics with the Horizon universe. Sony declined the proposal. The lawsuit emphasizes that despite being denied the license, Tencent proceeded to release what Sony claims is an unauthorized near-replica, leading to significant frustration on Sony’s part.
The community’s reaction has also been swift and critical. Many gamers and reviewers have mocked the game as “Horizon Zero Originality,” with widespread accusations of shameless imitation. Sony has included some of these public reactions as supporting evidence, arguing that Light of Motiram is already widely perceived within the industry and fanbase as a copycat product.
Sony’s lawsuit lists multiple allegations, including:
• Copyright infringement
• Trademark infringement
• False designation of origin
Sony is asking the court to issue an injunction to halt the development and distribution of Light of Motiram, along with a destruction order for all infringing materials and promotional assets. Additionally, Sony is seeking substantial monetary damages, with statutory penalties of up to $150,000 per infringing work.
The lawsuit highlights that the Horizon series has sold over 38 million units worldwide since its debut, making it one of Sony’s most valuable original IPs and a cornerstone of its brand identity. Sony warns that allowing Tencent to release an unlicensed, near-identical product could mislead consumers and severely harm its brand and commercial interests.
As of now, Tencent has not released any official statement in response to the lawsuit. Light of Motiram remains available for preview on Steam and the Epic Games Store, where it can be wishlisted, though no official release date has been announced.
This clash between tech giants is poised to become one of the most closely watched legal battles in the gaming world this year. Beyond setting a potential precedent for intellectual property protection, it could have lasting implications for how future collaborations and licensing deals between Chinese and international developers are handled.
