This incident began as what seemed like a heartwarming online romance but ultimately unfolded into a case of fraud and family distress. Mr. Zhang, a man in his sixties working as a sanitation worker, met a woman online who presented herself as caring and attentive. The two quickly fell into what they described as a passionate relationship, even calling each other “husband” and “wife.” According to Mr. Zhang’s son, after the death of his mother a few years ago, the family supported his father’s desire for companionship. They were aware that he had even bought the woman expensive gifts, known as “three gold items.”

Over the course of just three to four months, Mr. Zhang, trusting the relationship and investing in the romance, transferred money and purchased gifts for the woman, totaling nearly 70,000 yuan—a sum representing almost all of his lifelong savings. Mr. Zhang maintained that he was pursuing the relationship with marriage in mind. However, by chance, his son discovered that the woman claimed to have been born in 1986, making her more than twenty years younger than his father. Concerned about the financial expenditure and suspicious of the circumstances, the son reported the situation to the police. Investigations revealed that the woman was already married and had a child, meaning she had not divorced her husband.

The son expressed frustration, saying, “My father earns just over a thousand yuan a month cleaning streets; tens of thousands was all his savings. And she isn’t even divorced—how could she marry my father?” What seemed like a romantic story quickly turned into a case of deceit and financial exploitation.

When questioned by the media, the woman claimed that she was also a victim. She alleged that Mr. Zhang had threatened her with private photos, saying he would show them to her relatives and friends. Regarding the money, she explained, “I lent him money before, and he transferred it to me. Since I accepted it, why should I return it?”

This case highlights the risks that elderly individuals may face in online relationships, including emotional manipulation and financial exploitation, underscoring the importance of ensuring both digital safety and financial security for older adults.
