Recently, a Taiwanese visitor to the area around Okubo Park in Tokyo observed that many young Japanese sex workers, as well as transgender individuals from Southeast Asia, were offering companionship services. Beyond traditional sexual services, some Japanese women run “Talking Bar”-style establishments, providing conversational and drinking companionship. These women often wait on the streets or in alleys with signs to attract clients. Once a client selects a companion, they are usually guided to a small upstairs room designed like a private mini-bar, where one-on-one or small group interactions take place.

During the session, clients are expected to purchase drinks such as beer, soda, or cola, with typical fees around 3,300 yen per hour. If a client does not order alcohol, the companion may order tea at her own expense, priced around 1,000 yen. In addition to the main host, other women may join the interaction, asking to participate in conversations or inviting the client to buy them drinks, adding variety to the experience. The clientele is mainly young Japanese men interested in otaku or subculture communities.

This phenomenon highlights the complexity of nightlife culture around Okubo Park, blending elements of drinking companionship, social interaction, and in some cases, sex work. For visitors, the “one-on-one chatting with drinks” setup offers a cultural insight but also carries potential safety and legal risks. It is advised to exercise caution, respect local laws, and observe social norms when participating.
