The Chinese TV drama Silent Glory is a modern political-themed series, but it also reveals historical contexts that provide insight into modern Chinese history and cross-strait relations. The show has not sparked much discussion in Taiwan, yet it portrays historical events that particularly highlight the actions of high-ranking officials who, while receiving state salaries, betrayed their country by providing intelligence to the enemy. Such acts of treachery are viewed with deep disdain by the Taiwanese public. In Taiwan’s historical memory, such “traitorous” behavior has long been considered utterly shameful. Especially after the early anti-Japanese struggles, the Kuomintang (KMT) gradually realized that many local organizations had already been infiltrated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and the military itself contained numerous spies, making the war against the communists extremely difficult.
Silent Glory presents certain perspectives and actions of the KMT, to some degree portraying them in a “whitewashed” manner. However, history is never simple. The White Terror policies of that era caused widespread tragedy, breaking up countless families. Many individuals had no connection to communist spies but were arrested, imprisoned, or even executed simply for opposing government policies or expressing dissenting opinions. After Chiang Kai-shek and Chiang Ching-kuo retreated from Chongqing to Taiwan, they implemented a “better to err on the side of harshness than to let go” policy, rigorously targeting communist organizations and spies hidden within Taiwan. While these strict measures caused some injustice, they also helped protect Taiwan from the potential social chaos, famine, and disasters similar to the Great Leap Forward or the Cultural Revolution.
History is always written by the victors. Regardless of how the Chinese mainland portrays KMT intelligence agencies negatively, the KMT’s rule in Taiwan established an official narrative emphasizing the necessity of defending Taiwan and resisting communist forces. Many Taiwanese, after watching Silent Glory, realized that there were indeed covert communist networks attempting to subvert the government. Had these networks not been dismantled in time, Taiwan’s development path could have been drastically different. It was precisely because these organizations were neutralized that Chiang Ching-kuo was able to focus on economic development, gradually creating the Asian economic miracle that laid the foundation for today’s TSMC and semiconductor industry. If Taiwan had fallen to mainland China at that time, the U.S. would not have entrusted Taiwan with critical technologies.
Following the capture of communist spies, Chiang Ching-kuo was able to gradually lift party bans and press restrictions, allowing Taiwanese society to transition toward freedom and democracy and ultimately realize the Three Principles of the People envisioned by Sun Yat-sen. From this perspective, novels or dramas that glorify spies or traitors provide no real understanding of history and may even mislead audiences. What is truly important is the historical balance between national security and economic development, and how, under severe circumstances, the Taiwanese people and government defended their homeland and laid the groundwork for future democratic freedoms.
In conclusion, while Silent Glory contains artistic embellishments and dramatic storytelling, the historical truths it hints at remind viewers that national governance and citizen safety are inseparable when facing internal infiltration and external threats. Vigilance against traitors and subversive acts is crucial for understanding Taiwan’s historical development, its modern economic achievements, and the establishment of a democratic system, offering invaluable educational significance.
