With the official release of the Simplified Chinese version of the Pokémon 151 series on October 17, a number of products were shipped overseas, sparking widespread controversy. Some international players reported that after opening six boxes of the 151 series, they had received only a single Pikachu AR card, raising suspicions about the presence of “re-sealed boxes.” In fact, this issue has not been limited to the 151 series; earlier popular products such as the “Gem Packs” and the “151 Coin Sets” have also shown similar problems. Subsequently, images purportedly showing re-sealed 151 series boxes began circulating online, prompting further speculation among players about potential leaks or insider information.
In reality, re-sealing issues had already appeared with early 151 series products, but they did not attract much attention at the time. After the release of the “151 Surprise” series in July, the popularity of the Simplified Chinese products surged, with some items’ prices climbing from around 300 yuan per box to as high as 1,400 yuan. Driven by high profits, some merchants began taking risks, and re-sealing practices became increasingly rampant, even spreading to overseas markets and causing a trust crisis among some international players toward Simplified Chinese Pokémon products.
Players can use several methods to identify genuine boxes and avoid re-sealed ones. If they have an official box on hand, they should carefully compare the box artwork and colors. Genuine boxes employ high-precision printing techniques with highly accurate color reproduction, whereas re-sealed boxes often show noticeable color deviations. Another method is to use a smartphone camera to zoom in on the text at the bottom of the box: authentic boxes feature clear, sharp-edged fonts, while re-sealed boxes often display blurred or uneven lettering due to printing limitations. Players can also lightly press tape onto the Poké Ball patterns on the shrink wrap; genuine patterns adhere firmly and do not peel off easily, whereas patterns on re-sealed boxes tend to come off immediately.
The anti-counterfeit label on the side of the box provides another point of comparison. Authentic labels are made of foil with a smooth surface and crisp graphics, while re-sealed boxes often have rougher labels with blurred details when magnified. Examining the box printing under magnification reveals that genuine boxes maintain a uniform grid-like texture, whereas re-sealed boxes frequently show blurred or smudged edges due to lower printing precision. The cards inside re-sealed boxes are often recycled items and may exhibit white edges, stains, or wear. If players notice cards in poor condition upon opening a box, they should exercise caution.
Currently, multiple second-hand platforms, including Xianyu, Douyin, and Douban, feature frequent postings for Pokémon card buybacks. These buyback activities are likely linked to the re-sealed box supply chain. Therefore, in addition to learning to identify re-sealed boxes, players are advised to avoid participating in card recycling, cutting off the supply chain at its source to protect their own interests and maintain the integrity of the market.
