At around 2:15 a.m. local time on February 4, a deeply disturbing family tragedy occurred in Ghaziabad, a city in India’s Uttar Pradesh state. Three underage sisters from the same family reportedly jumped to their deaths from the balcony of their ninth-floor apartment, following prolonged and intense conflict with their father over mobile phone use and household discipline.

According to police and local media reports, the victims were 16-year-old Vishika, 14-year-old Prachhi, and 12-year-old Pankhi. The three sisters had long been extremely obsessed with Korean pop culture. They spent most of their time using their phones to watch Korean films, television dramas, idol programs, and listen to Korean music. They even adopted Korean names for themselves, treating Korean culture as a core part of their personal identity. This level of immersion had severely disrupted their daily lives and education, and family members stated that all three girls had dropped out of school and stayed at home for nearly two years.

Recently, the sisters became deeply engrossed in a Korean romance-themed mobile game, further intensifying their emotional dependence on their phones. After repeated attempts to persuade and discipline them failed, their father confiscated their phones several days prior to the incident, hoping to force them back into a more regular routine and academic life. Police believe this action became the final breaking point in the already strained family relationship. The girls reportedly viewed their father’s decision as “authoritarian” and as a denial of their chosen way of life, which ultimately led them to develop an extreme sense of resentment and a desire for retaliation.

In the early hours of February 4, the sisters went to the apartment’s balcony while their parents were asleep. They locked the door connecting the balcony to the living room from the inside, opened the window, and then jumped from the ninth floor one after another. Their screams as they fell woke their parents, who rushed to break into the balcony in panic, but by then it was already too late to prevent the tragedy.

In the immediate aftermath, some reports suggested that only one of the sisters may have initially intended to commit suicide, while the other two fell accidentally while trying to stop her. However, police later found a small pocket diary at the scene containing eight pages of suicide notes. This discovery ruled out the possibility of an accidental fall and confirmed that all three deaths were the result of a premeditated group suicide.

In the notes, the sisters wrote: “Dad, we are sorry. Korea is our life. Korea is our greatest love. No matter what you say, we cannot give it up. So we are going to commit suicide.” Police regarded this passage as key evidence of the girls’ psychological state and motivation. In addition, handwritten messages were found on the walls of the girls’ bedroom, including phrases such as “I am very, very lonely” and “This breaks my heart” (quoted verbatim), suggesting that they had been living with profound loneliness and emotional distress for a long time.

Neighbors alerted the authorities after hearing loud noises, but the ambulance reportedly did not arrive at the scene until about an hour later. By that time, all three girls had already died from their injuries. The incident sent shockwaves through the local community and sparked widespread public debate, with many questioning the dangers of long-term internet and entertainment addiction among minors, the breakdown of family communication, the lack of mental health support, and the potentially devastating consequences of confrontational or overly forceful parenting methods.

Police have classified the case as a family tragedy resulting in a collective suicide and have urged parents to seek professional psychological counseling and support when dealing with adolescents who are deeply immersed in digital content or subcultures, rather than relying solely on coercive measures that may lead to irreversible outcomes.
