After nearly a quarter century of waiting, what many fans are calling a true “renaissance” has finally become reality: the classic shōjo manga Anatolia Story (also known as Red River) has officially been announced for a television anime adaptation. For long-time readers, the news feels momentous—this legendary series, which concluded back in 2002, will return to the screen 24 years later, marking another major milestone in the recent trend of adapting beloved classic manga into new animated productions.
Anatolia Story was created by Japanese manga artist篠原千繪 and originally serialized in the shōjo magazine Sho-Comi. The series became renowned for blending meticulous historical research with romance, political intrigue, and fantasy storytelling. The plot follows Yuri, a modern Japanese high school girl who is suddenly summoned to the ancient Hittite Empire, where she must survive court conspiracies and cultural upheaval while gradually maturing into a strong and influential figure. Her deeply emotional romance with Prince Kail forms the emotional core of the narrative. Because of its “modern girl transported to an ancient world” premise, the work is often regarded as one of the early pioneers of the isekai (otherworldly transportation) genre.
The anime is scheduled to premiere in the summer of 2026. Production has been entrusted to the long-established Japanese animation studio Tatsunoko Production (龍之子製作), a company with a history dating back to the 1960s and known for producing numerous influential anime titles. Their involvement has reassured fans who hope the adaptation will faithfully capture the original’s historical scale and emotional depth.
The project’s chief director will be 小林浩輔, best known for directing Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure. He is widely recognized for strong pacing and nuanced character emotion, leading to expectations that he will successfully balance the series’ romantic intensity with its epic historical narrative. Series composition and script supervision will be handled by 冨田頼子, whose experience with long-form storytelling and character psychology positions her as a key figure in adapting the manga’s extensive storyline into an effective animated structure.
Notably, Shinohara shared an official message on February 15—her birthday—expressing both surprise and gratitude at the announcement. She reflected that even after 24 years since the manga’s conclusion, knowing that readers still remember and cherish the story enough to bring it to animation is one of the greatest joys a creator can experience. Her message quickly spread across social media, symbolizing a renewed emotional connection between longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.
With worldwide cumulative sales exceeding 20 million copies, Anatolia Story earned its reputation not only through its romantic narrative but also through its detailed depiction of ancient West Asian civilizations. The manga carefully portrays clothing, religious rituals, political systems, and warfare, giving it an uncommon historical richness within the shōjo genre. Yuri’s transformation from an ordinary teenager into a figure capable of influencing an empire’s fate—and her timeless love story with Prince Kail—remains a defining memory for many readers’ youth.
The upcoming anime adaptation is widely seen as a sign that classic shōjo manga still possess strong cross-generational appeal. At the same time, it reflects the anime industry’s growing interest in stories with proven narrative depth and established fanbases. As the premiere approaches, audiences are eagerly anticipating whether this 24-year-spanning legend can once again ignite a wave of historical romance for a new era.
