Although the Switch 2 had previously claimed the top spot in U.S. sales in December 2025, the five-year-old PS5 regained the lead at the start of 2026.
In terms of hardware performance, the PS5 once again secured the No.1 position. Despite a 17% year-over-year decline in revenue, it successfully maintained its status as the best-selling console in the United States. The Switch 2 ranked second in January; however, its strong sales performance offset declines from other platforms—Xbox Series X/S sales fell by 27%, while the original Switch dropped by 79%—helping drive overall hardware spending up by 16%.
From a global perspective, although the Switch 2 trailed the PS5 in U.S. sales during January, estimates from VGChartz indicate that worldwide sales of the Switch 2 in January 2026 (approximately 765,000 units) slightly exceeded those of the PS5 (about 760,000 units).
Key market data for January 2026 shows that the PS5 led both U.S. console unit sales and revenue rankings, with the Nintendo Switch 2 placing second in both categories. The best-selling games in the United States were Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in first place and NBA 2K26 in second.
