Super Micro Computer (SMCI) and members of its founding family have recently been embroiled in serious allegations involving the smuggling of high-end servers. It is important to note that Supermicro and AMD are entirely separate companies: the former focuses on server hardware, while the latter is a chip manufacturer, and they should not be confused.
The core of the case involves U.S. prosecutors charging family members associated with Supermicro for allegedly illegally shipping servers equipped with high-end NVIDIA chips worth up to $2.5 billion to China. Although founder Charles Liang was not included in the initial wave of arrests, the investigation targeted his family, particularly his younger brother, Liang Jianda, whose company, Kingway Technology, is alleged to have played a key role in the smuggling network. The operation reportedly used “white glove” companies in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand to bypass U.S. export controls, transporting controlled NVIDIA GPUs such as the A100 and H100 series to China.
The incident has had a significant impact on Supermicro. Its stock price plummeted due to the negative news and earlier financial controversies, including the resignation of auditor Ernst & Young (EY), undermining market confidence. Operationally, Supermicro faced difficulties obtaining NVIDIA GPUs due to export restrictions and is subject to more stringent compliance investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Additionally, media and analysts have noted that Supermicro’s close business ties with the Liang brothers’ other companies, such as Dashun and Kingway, involve deeply intertwined transactions and supply chains, representing a major governance risk and internal blind spot for the company.
In distinguishing the two companies, Supermicro (SMCI) was founded by Charles Liang and focuses on AI servers, making it the central subject of this smuggling investigation. AMD, led by Lisa Su, is a chip manufacturer; although its stock has recently fluctuated due to AI demand, it is not involved in this case.
