According to the latest data from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Ukraine currently has eight World Heritage Sites, including seven cultural sites and one natural site. However, due to ongoing armed conflict, several of these sites have been added to the “List of World Heritage in Danger” to draw greater international attention and protection.

Ukraine’s seven cultural World Heritage Sites each reflect the country’s rich history, religion, and architectural heritage. In Kyiv, the Saint Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra symbolize the religious and political power of Kyivan Rus, combining Byzantine and local architectural styles, and were inscribed as World Heritage Sites in 1990. The Historic Centre of Lviv in western Ukraine preserves architectural features spanning from the medieval period onward, earning it the nickname “Florence of Eastern Europe”; it was inscribed in 1998.

The Struve Geodetic Arc, inscribed in 2005, is a transnational heritage site. Ukraine hosts several observation points that document humanity’s scientific exploration of the Earth’s shape and size. The Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans, part of Chernivtsi University and inscribed in 2011, is renowned for its unique blend of Byzantine, Gothic, and Moorish architectural styles. The Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora, inscribed in 2013, represents an ancient Greek colonial settlement, showcasing early agricultural landscapes and city defense systems.

The Wooden Churches of the Carpathian Region, a transnational site shared with Poland and inscribed in 2013, includes eight intricately crafted wooden churches in Ukraine that reflect unique construction techniques under both Eastern Orthodox and Catholic traditions. The most recent addition, the Historic Centre of Odesa, inscribed in 2023, highlights the city’s cultural diversity as a major Black Sea port. However, shortly after its designation, it was placed on the endangered list due to the impacts of war, underscoring the severe threats that conflict poses to cultural heritage.
