April 15 marks the annual Jackie Robinson Day, one of the most meaningful commemorations in Major League Baseball (MLB).

This day honors Jackie Robinson, who in 1947 wore number 42 for the Brooklyn Dodgers and became the first African American player in the modern MLB era. His debut broke baseball’s long-standing racial barrier and is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the broader American civil rights movement.

In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of Robinson’s debut, then-commissioner Bud Selig made a historic decision: number 42 would be permanently retired across the entire league. This meant that no new player on any team could ever wear the number again. It remains the first and only time in North American professional sports that a single number has been universally retired league-wide.

However, players who were already wearing 42 at the time were allowed to continue under a “grandfather clause.” Among them, the most iconic was Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees. Thanks to his exceptionally long and successful career, Rivera continued wearing 42 until his retirement in 2013, becoming the last active MLB player to do so.

Rivera often described wearing number 42 as both an honor and a responsibility, emphasizing that he carried Robinson’s legacy every time he stepped onto the field.

Since 2009, MLB has added a powerful tradition to this day: every player, coach, and umpire wears number 42 on April 15, typically without nameplates. This unified gesture symbolizes equality, respect, and the enduring impact of Robinson’s legacy.

In essence, Jackie Robinson Day is not just about remembering a legendary athlete—it serves as a reminder of how sports can influence social change, and how one number, 42, has come to represent courage, equality, and progress.
