然而,王位並非只有她一人能爭取。另一位花仙「朵凱妮西亞」(台譯:娜娜)也企圖奪取繼承權。她帶著一隻會施法、能變身的狸貓作為助手,並擁有名為「花粉風」的特殊能力。每當露露即將找到七色花時,娜娜便會利用花粉風將她與伙伴吹散,所幸的是,每次受阻的花都並非真正的七色花,讓露露仍能繼續她的旅程。
在這段冒險中,總有一個神秘的少年默默守護著露露,他就是「瑟吉」(台譯:李嘉文)。事實上,他的真實身份是花仙王國的王子。平時,他化身凡人,以攝影師的身份跟隨露露的腳步,為她與花留下影像紀錄。他很少在露露面前現身,但每當一段故事結束,他總會出現在人們身邊,贈送一包花的種子,並講述那朵花所代表的花語與祝福。

“Lulu, The Flower Angel” (Japanese title Hana no Ko Lunlun, official English name Lulu, The Flower Angel) is a 1979 magical girl anime produced by Toei Animation, the tenth entry in Toei’s famous “Majokko” series. It was broadcast on TV Asahi right after Candy Candy, and from its very first episode, it captured the hearts of children. For many who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, it remains one of the most cherished anime memories of childhood.
The story follows a twelve-year-old girl named Lulu (known as “Xiao Bei” in the Taiwanese version, Lunlun in Japanese), who lives a quiet life with an elderly couple. One day, she encounters a dog named Cateau (Ruff in Taiwan, “Raifu”) and a cat named Nouveau (Cat in Taiwan, “Mimi”), only to discover that they are messengers from the Flower Kingdom. They reveal Lulu’s true identity: she is of royal Flower lineage, and the queen has entrusted her with a mission—to search for the legendary Seven-Colored Flowers on Earth. Only by completing this quest can Lulu inherit the throne. To aid her journey, Lulu receives the magical Flower Key, which allows her to transform her outfits whenever she invokes the power of flowers.
But Lulu is not the only one seeking the throne. Another Flower spirit, Togenesia (known as “Nana” in Taiwan), also desires succession. Accompanied by a shape-shifting, spell-casting tanuki, she wields the powerful “Flower Storm,” a wind that scatters Lulu and her companions whenever Lulu gets close to finding a Seven-Colored Flower. Fortunately, each time this happens, the flower in question turns out not to be the real one, allowing Lulu’s journey to continue.
Throughout her adventure, Lulu is quietly watched over by a mysterious boy named Cierge (Taiwanese name “Li Jiawen”). His true identity is none other than the Prince of the Flower Kingdom. Disguised as a wandering photographer, he follows Lulu’s travels, documenting her encounters with flowers and people. Though he rarely reveals himself, he appears at the end of each story to offer a packet of flower seeds to those Lulu has helped, explaining the symbolic meaning—the language of flowers—as a final blessing.
As Lulu journeys across different lands, she meets countless people, shares touching experiences, and discovers new truths about love and happiness. Unlike most magical girl series, Lulu, The Flower Angel does not rely on intense battles to drive the story. Instead, it conveys warmth, optimism, and emotional lessons through flowers and their meanings. The Taiwanese-dubbed version later spread to Mainland China, where it sparked a “magical girl” craze during the 1980s, leaving a deep impression on a generation of viewers.
Cultural quirks added to its charm. For example, Lulu’s magic chant “Fureru, Fureru” was intended to be the French word for “flower” (fleur), but due to a mistake, it actually became the French word for “brother” (frère). Rather than diminishing the show, this “blunder” became a beloved part of its legacy. Similarly, the word “Runrun” (Lunlun’s Japanese name) was originally chosen by writer Shiro Jinbo simply because it sounded pleasant when recited from the kana chart. Unexpectedly, “runrun” soon entered everyday Japanese as an onomatopoeic term for happiness, and even became a trend word in the 1980s thanks to author Mariko Hayashi, influencing a whole generation of young women.
Decades later, Lulu, The Flower Angel continues to inspire. In 2023, Toei Animation and Tencent Video announced a new sequel project, Lulu, The Flower Angel: The Dialogue of Magical Fragrance, with plans for manga, anime, and games, proving the franchise’s enduring cultural value and adaptability.
