Released by Use in February 1989 for the Nintendo Famicom, Hyakkiyakou (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons) is a uniquely structured “dual-layer action RPG” inspired by traditional Japanese yokai folklore. At the time, it stood out for its eerie ukiyo-e-inspired visuals and its distinctive day-night cycle system, giving it a hauntingly atmospheric charm that set it apart from other fantasy titles.

From a technical and artistic perspective, the game showcases a strong commitment to visualizing classic Japanese ghost stories within the limitations of late-1980s hardware. The gameplay alternates between an overhead world map for exploration and side-view scenes for combat and towns. What leaves the strongest impression is the design of the yokai themselves. Creatures such as the umbrella spirit, flaming wheel demon, and towering skeletal giants are rendered in highly detailed pixel art, exuding a grotesque yet fascinating aesthetic. The soundtrack blends the somber tones of traditional Japanese gagaku with electronic elements, and when night falls, the music shifts into a more oppressive and tense arrangement, perfectly evoking the chaos of a supernatural night parade.

 

The story is set in a demon-infested version of Japan during the Edo period. After the gates of hell are opened, malevolent spirits flood into the human world, leaving devastation in their wake. The player takes on the role of a young exorcist gifted with spiritual powers, embarking on a journey across desolate fields, graveyards, and ancient temples. In order to seal the source of the chaos and rescue lost souls, the protagonist must collect sacred orbs and divine weapons scattered across the land. The narrative ultimately leads to a descent into the depths of hell for a final confrontation with the demon lord who commands the horde of yokai, forming a classic tale of destiny, spiritual awakening, and the clash between light and darkness.

The gameplay system introduces a dynamic time cycle that significantly impacts strategy. During the day, enemies are fewer and weaker, making it ideal for travel and gathering information. However, once night falls, the titular “Night Parade of One Hundred Demons” begins, dramatically increasing both the number and strength of enemies. Players must constantly monitor the in-game time gauge and decide whether to press forward or seek refuge in safe locations such as temples. Combat takes on the form of an action shooter, with the protagonist firing spiritual energy projectiles in multiple directions. Precision movement is essential, as enemies often follow erratic patterns and can pass through obstacles. In addition, players must manage items such as talismans and charms, and quickly switch between different spiritual attributes to exploit enemy weaknesses, adding a layer of tactical depth to each encounter.

Upon release, Hyakkiyakou received mixed but notable recognition. Critics praised its strong artistic direction and immersive world-building rooted in Japanese folklore, highlighting it as a culturally rich and stylistically distinctive title. However, its steep difficulty curve, high encounter rate, and sometimes unclear navigation made it less accessible to general audiences. As a result, it did not achieve mainstream success at the time, but it has since been remembered as a hidden gem on the Famicom—a uniquely atmospheric work that boldly captures the fear and mystique of traditional Japanese supernatural legends.
