The story continues from Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari. Former student council president Goro Toudou, humiliated in the previous competition, persuades his wealthy father to invite Kunio and his friends to participate in the “World Tournament” in the United States. However, this is actually a trap: Goro recruits the physically imposing and nearly unbeatable American team, including relatives of Kunio’s old rival Sabu, intending to humiliate Kunio on the world stage. Players must lead their team to victory across five absurd events, scoring the most points to thwart Goro’s plans.
Gameplay is highly creative, with each event testing both reflexes and strategy. In the 400-meter hurdles, players can not only run but also kick over hurdles to attack opponents, requiring careful timing of jumps and spin attacks. The hammer throw involves navigating obstacle-laden fields to throw the ball as far as possible. Swimming battles require managing oxygen and stamina while physically grappling with opponents, pressing their heads underwater or punching frantically. Roof-top jumping challenges players to leap across skyscraper rooftops, where mistakes cost valuable time. Judo matches are one-on-one fights with unique special moves for each character, such as Kunio’s Mach Kick, which can be executed once energy is full for a flashy throw.
Bikkuri Nekketsu Shinpuru received high praise for its combination of strategy and fun. Planning your lineup and buying items between events adds a layer of tactical depth, while exaggerated reactions to injuries and the absurd strength of characters like American team captain Hafuu inject humor. It is considered one of the most interactive sports games on the Famicom, demonstrating that winning is not just about speed, but about raw skill and clever tactics.
One of the most memorable experiences comes from pressing buttons frantically during the swimming event to hold an opponent under water, or finishing the judo match with Kunio’s signature throw to defeat a top rival, leaving players with a satisfying sense of triumph.
