Although it retains the series name and characters, the game takes a bold departure in gameplay. Unlike its predecessors, which focused on platforming action, this installment transforms into a fixed-screen shooter. In addition, the protagonist is no longer the familiar Mario, but a brand-new character—Stanley, a greenhouse caretaker—bringing a completely different perspective and atmosphere to the series.

The player must quickly switch focus between driving Donkey Kong back and eliminating nearby threats. Losing all flowers or coming into contact with enemies results in losing a life. Occasionally, Donkey Kong drops a power spray canister; catching it significantly boosts the range and force of Stanley’s spray, allowing players to turn the tide rapidly. Although the controls are intuitive, the game demands sharp reflexes and precise timing.

Reception of Donkey Kong 3 was notably mixed. Critics generally praised its responsive shooting mechanics and fast-paced gameplay, highlighting the intense bursts of action and satisfying pressure release it provides. However, for many players who associated the Donkey Kong name with platforming, the drastic shift in genre felt disorienting, which affected its overall popularity and commercial performance. In retrospect, the game is often regarded as a transitional experiment during Nintendo’s exploration of action game design.
