Gameplay builds upon the Super Famicom version of the original Aretha, retaining the multi-directional turn-based battle system. Enemies can attack from four directions, but unlike the previous game, there may be no enemies directly in front of Ariel. Players must adjust her facing direction to defend or counter attacks from the side or rear. Combat damage is now quantified, making it easier to track which enemies have been hit. Additionally, the feature that prevented BGM interruption in the original game was removed, allowing music to play continuously like in standard RPGs.
A major new feature is the "Mist Worm" synthesis system. Players can use the remains and souls of defeated monsters to craft unique equipment. Placing a soul on an altar summons a fairy to assist with synthesis. There are six types of souls—fire, water, wind, earth, light, and darkness—and the final equipment produced depends on the ratio and placement of these souls, adding strategic depth and customization to gear creation.
The party system includes fixed characters Materia and Doole, with a third party member changing as the game progresses. The “Consultation System” can be accessed at any time, allowing players to enjoy character interactions and dialogue beyond just Materia. Graphically, the game made significant improvements over its predecessor, with detailed sprites for main characters including Materia, Doole, and others.
Another addition is the “Magical Capsule” system, where capsules scattered across the map provide a random consumable item when used. Hidden characters from earlier versions, such as Game Boy releases, also appear in this game, increasing exploration and collection elements. The game’s later stages, particularly fortress areas, are challenging, with some players spending months to complete them, offering both difficulty and a strong sense of accomplishment.
Aretha II was well-received in Japan, praised for its enhanced combat system, rich character interactions, strategic equipment synthesis, and challenging gameplay.
