Capcom released the arcade version of Son Son in 1984, later porting it to the Famicom in 1986. It is one of the company’s early and most distinctive horizontal scrolling action games. Although it is loosely inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, the game does not follow a serious or faithful retelling of the pilgrimage story. Instead, it adopts a lighthearted, fast-paced arcade style that reflects Capcom’s experimental and playful design approach in its early years.

The core gameplay of Son Son is built around a unique multi-lane movement system. The screen is divided into six horizontal lanes, and the player can freely switch between them while constantly advancing through a scrolling environment that moves from right to left. This creates a constant sense of pressure, as enemies and obstacles continuously approach from the front. Players must not only attack incoming enemies but also carefully reposition themselves across different lanes to avoid danger and collect items. This layered movement system was quite unusual for its time and helped the game stand out among other early action shooters.

Combat in the game is relatively simple in concept, as the player attacks by firing energy shots forward. However, the challenge comes from the fact that enemies can appear on multiple lanes and sometimes from unexpected positions, forcing quick reactions and constant lane switching. The gameplay emphasizes rhythm and spatial awareness rather than complex mechanics, which gives it a fast and addictive arcade feel.

One of the most important features of Son Son is its cooperative two-player mode, which contributed greatly to its popularity on the Famicom. The first player controls Son Son, modeled after Sun Wukong, while the second player controls Ton Ton, a pig-like companion character. Both characters perform similar attacks, but the cooperative dynamic allows players to split responsibilities across lanes or concentrate fire on stronger enemies and bosses. This cooperation, combined with occasional competition for items, creates a lively and often chaotic multiplayer experience that was especially appealing in home settings.

The scoring and item system also plays a major role in the game’s design. Various food items appear throughout the stages, such as fruits and sweets, and collecting them increases the player’s score. This “food reward” mechanic became one of Capcom’s early signature design elements. In addition, the game features the iconic POW item, which instantly transforms all on-screen enemies into food, allowing players to quickly gain points and recover control of difficult situations. This kind of high-impact reward system would later appear in many other Capcom titles.

The game consists of nineteen stages in total, with the ultimate goal of reaching “Tenkai” and encountering a divine figure at the end of the journey. Along the way, players travel through a variety of environments such as forests, deserts, and water areas, which helps keep the progression visually and structurally diverse despite the simple mechanics.

In terms of presentation, Son Son features bright and colorful pixel art that gives the game a cheerful and accessible look. The character designs are simple but expressive, blending early Japanese arcade aesthetics with a slightly cartoon-like style. The soundtrack is similarly distinctive, featuring repetitive but catchy melodies that are highly memorable and contribute to the game’s energetic atmosphere.

From a historical perspective, Son Son represents an important step in Capcom’s early evolution as a game developer. It helped establish ideas around multi-layered movement, cooperative gameplay, and reward-based item systems that would later influence many of the company’s more famous works. For players in the 1980s, it was a simple yet highly engaging arcade experience that was easy to pick up but challenging to master.

Overall, Son Son remains a classic example of early 8-bit arcade design, valued today not for narrative depth or complexity, but for its unique movement system, cooperative fun, and fast-paced gameplay loop.
