Released on August 28, 1986, by Bandai for the Famicom, Mobile Suit Z Gundam: Hot Scramble is the very first home console game in the Gundam franchise.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this title is its development background. It involved Satoshi Tajiri, who would later found Game Freak, as well as Masanobu Endo, the creator of classics like Xevious and The Tower of Druaga. This combination of talent gave the game an experimental edge rarely seen at the time.

Set during an era of extremely limited hardware, Hot Scramble stood out as a bold attempt to merge different gameplay styles. The game shifts between a pseudo-3D first-person shooting perspective and traditional 2D side-scrolling action. During approach sequences, players pilot the Z Gundam through space in a cockpit-like view reminiscent of early arcade shooters. Once inside enemy strongholds, the game transitions into a side-scrolling format where platforming and combat take center stage.

Visually, the game may appear primitive by modern standards, but at the time, the ability to control the transforming Z Gundam was a major highlight for fans. The soundtrack further enhanced the experience by incorporating arrangements inspired by Mizu no Hoshi e Ai wo Komete, the iconic opening theme performed by Hiroko Moriguchi.

The story follows the latter part of Mobile Suit Z Gundam, placing players in the role of Kamille Bidan. As a pilot of the AEUG, he battles against the Titans and Neo Zeon forces. The ultimate objective is to break through enemy defenses, infiltrate key installations such as the colony laser “Gryps 2,” and destroy their core systems to bring the conflict to an end.

Gameplay is divided into two distinct phases. In the first half, players engage in pseudo-3D combat, navigating space while aiming at incoming enemies and obstacles. Precision targeting is essential, and once enough energy is accumulated, the Z Gundam can transform into its Wave Rider form for high-speed traversal. In the second half, the action shifts inside enemy bases, where the game becomes a side-scrolling mission. Players use beam rifles and beam sabers to fight through enemies while searching for hidden core units that must be destroyed before escaping the collapsing facility.

The difficulty is notably high, with strict collision detection and increasingly aggressive enemy patterns. Encounters with powerful mobile suits require quick reflexes and memorization, making the game particularly challenging even for experienced players.

Upon release, Hot Scramble received a unique reception. Critics praised its ambitious design and technical experimentation, especially the attempt to recreate a 3D shooting experience on the Famicom. At the same time, the game’s uneven pacing and repetitive side-scrolling sections drew some criticism. However, for Gundam fans, it delivered an unprecedented sense of immersion and excitement.

A particularly legendary aspect of the game is the existence of a limited “Final Version,” distributed through a promotional campaign. Only 1,000 copies were produced, and this version removed the 2D segments entirely, focusing instead on a more refined and intense 3D shooting experience. Today, it is considered one of the rarest and most valuable Famicom cartridges among collectors.

Historically, Hot Scramble holds an important place as the foundation of action-based Gundam games. It established key elements that would become staples of the genre, including transformation mechanics, iconic music integration, and climactic boss battles. For many players, the most unforgettable moment was the thrill of watching a distant speck in space rapidly grow into an approaching enemy mobile suit—and destroying it at the very last second.
