Players can perform a variety of attacks, including sword swings, crouch attacks, and jump strikes, and must time attacks to coincide with the movements of the hopping jiangshi. The game also features an elaborate system of talismans and items: talismans can immobilize enemies, the peachwood sword boosts attack power, bells can guide or control certain foes, and glutinous rice heals poison damage. Boss fights switch to one-on-one duels, testing the player’s mastery of timing and combat rhythm.

Upon release, Mr. Vampire was praised for its unique style, immersive atmosphere, and high difficulty. The challenging enemy behaviors and demanding combat made early progression difficult, but mastering the game provided a strong sense of accomplishment.
