《熱血時代劇》（Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki da yo Zen'in Shūgō!）是Technōs Japan在1991年7月26日於FC紅白機平台推出的作品。延續「熱血系列」的精神，但將舞台搬到日本江戶時代，以任俠題材為核心，並融合動作角色扮演與帶狀捲軸動作的玩法。玩家可以單人遊玩，也能與電腦或另一位玩家合作，體驗雙人冒險的樂趣。

故事的主角是國政（由國夫飾演），他受恩師文藏所託，必須查明導致文藏重病的幕後黑手。文藏的女兒阿琴在此時遭到綁架，國政於是與昔日的死對頭鶴松（由鮫島飾演）攜手同行，展開一場橫跨日本各地的旅程，從蝦夷到九州一路挑戰地方惡勢力，最終揭露潛伏在幕後的虎藏陰謀。這樣的劇情不僅充滿熱血，也帶有濃厚的時代劇風格。

操作承襲《熱血物語》的精隨。透過十字鍵移動，連按兩次即可衝刺；A鍵用於拳打或拾取道具，B鍵則是腳踢或投擲物品，兩鍵同時按下則能跳躍。必殺技需要在商店購買「招式書」才能習得，除了系列經典的「馬赫踢」、「旋風腿」，本作還加入了獨特的「人間魚雷」等新技。另一個亮點是夥伴系統，玩家能從擊敗的頭目中挑選一人作為 AI 夥伴，每位角色都有不同的成長曲線與必殺技，這在當時是相當新穎的設計。角色的屬性成長則透過打倒敵人獲得金錢，再到各地的「萬屋」購買食物或藥品來永久提升，包括體力、氣力、拳力、腿力、武器打擊力、防禦力等。

在市場評價方面，被視為系列的巔峰之作，也是FC末期的技術展現。遊戲採用開放式地圖，自由選擇前往日本各地的順序，並且擁有多重結局與隱藏商店，耐玩度極高。角色設定更是巧妙地將現代校園人物與古代職業結合，營造出反差萌的魅力。畫面與音樂也充分發揮FC的性能，背景細緻，音樂充滿和風熱血感，戰鬥時的節奏更是令人熱血沸騰。歷史上，它被認為是Technōs Japan在破產前最輝煌的作品之一，奠定「熱血風格」與時代劇結合的基礎。

有趣的是，本作的副標題「全員集合！」其實是致敬當時日本綜藝節目常用的口號。遊戲中的部分NPC名字與外觀也暗示Technōs Japan員工的化身。雖然背景設定在江戶時代，但遊戲依舊保留系列一貫的幽默風格，角色在戰鬥中會吐槽或搞笑，讓玩家在緊張的冒險中也能感受到輕鬆的氛圍。許多玩家甚至認為它比《熱血物語》更耐玩，是真正的精神續作。

Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki da yo Zen'in Shūgō! (commonly known as Nekketsu Jidaigeki) was released by Technōs Japan on July 26, 1991, for the Family Computer (NES). It carried forward the spirit of the “Kunio-kun” series but shifted the setting to Japan’s Edo period, adopting a ninkyō (chivalrous outlaw) theme. The game blended action RPG elements with side-scrolling brawler mechanics, allowing either solo play or cooperative play with a friend or computer-controlled partner.

The story follows Kunimasa (played by Kunio), who is entrusted by his mentor Bunzō to uncover the culprit behind Bunzō’s mysterious illness. At the same time, Bunzō’s daughter Akane (played by Hasebe) is kidnapped. Kunimasa joins forces with his former rival Tsurumatsu (played by Samejima), embarking on a journey across Japan—from Ezo in the north to Kyushu in the south—defeating local bosses and gradually exposing the sinister plot of the mastermind, Torazō. The narrative is both hot-blooded and steeped in the atmosphere of a period drama.

Gameplay mechanics build upon the foundation of River City Ransom. Movement is controlled with the D-pad, double-tapping to dash. The A button delivers punches or picks up items, the B button performs kicks or throws, and pressing A and B together triggers a jump. Special techniques must be purchased from shops in the form of “move manuals.” Classic moves like the “Mach Kick” and “Cyclone Spin Kick” return, alongside unique additions such as the “Human Torpedo.” A standout feature is the partner system: after defeating a boss, players can recruit them as AI companions, each with distinct growth curves and special techniques. Character attributes grow through earning money in battle and spending it at local shops to permanently boost stats such as stamina, spirit, punching power, kicking power, weapon strength, and defense.

Critics and players alike hailed Nekketsu Jidaigeki as a pinnacle of the series and a showcase of late-era Famicom technology. Its open-world map allowed players to freely choose the order of regions to visit, while multiple endings and hidden shops added immense replay value. The characters cleverly combined modern school archetypes with historical professions, creating a humorous and charming contrast. Graphics pushed the limits of the hardware, with detailed backgrounds and music that blended traditional Japanese motifs with the energetic “hot-blooded” style. Historically, the game is regarded as one of Technōs Japan’s crowning achievements before the company’s decline, cementing the foundation of the “Kunio-kun period drama” style.

Interestingly, the subtitle “Zen’in Shūgō!” (“Everyone Assemble!”) was a playful nod to catchphrases from Japanese variety shows of the era. Some NPCs were modeled after Technōs Japan staff members, adding an inside-joke flavor. Despite the Edo setting, the game retained the series’ trademark humor, with characters cracking jokes even in the middle of battles. Among fans, it is often considered the spiritual successor to River City Ransom, with some even claiming it surpasses that classic in terms of replayability.
