《LIVE A LIVE》(台灣常譯《狂飆騎士》)在遊戲史上確實佔有一席極具傳奇色彩的位置。最早於 1994 年在超級任天堂推出,由 時田貴司 執導(同時也是《Chrono Trigger》的核心製作人之一)。到了 2022 年,Square Enix 以近年備受好評的 HD-2D 技術將其完全重製,讓這部經典作品成功在 Nintendo Switch、PS4、PS5 與 PC 平台重獲新生。

In 2022, Square Enix brought the game back to life using its signature HD-2D technology, releasing it on platforms including the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC.
What makes this game stand out is its unconventional narrative structure. Instead of following a single continuous storyline, players can choose from multiple independent scenarios set across different time periods. Each chapter not only features a unique setting but also introduces distinct gameplay mechanics. One story might have no dialogue at all, relying entirely on visual expression, while another focuses on martial arts training and character inheritance. There are stealth-based missions where you can choose between total elimination or complete pacifism, a western-style trap defense scenario, a fighting game-inspired chapter where you learn moves by being attacked, a sci-fi horror story with minimal combat, and more.
After completing these initial chapters, players unlock a final scenario that ties all timelines together, revealing the deeper themes of the game. This fragmented storytelling that eventually converges was highly innovative for its time and still feels fresh today.
The remake’s HD-2D presentation is one of its biggest strengths, combining detailed pixel art with modern lighting and depth effects, similar to Octopath Traveler. The addition of full voice acting and a rearranged soundtrack supervised by Yoko Shimomura greatly enhances the emotional impact, especially with the iconic battle theme “MEGALOMANIA.”
Combat takes place on a grid-based battlefield, where positioning and timing are crucial. Actions are governed by a time gauge system, and different abilities can alter enemy positions or terrain, making battles feel more strategic than traditional turn-based systems.
Critically, the game is praised for its bold storytelling and thematic depth. It explores ideas such as heroism and the nature of hatred through its diverse cast and timelines, culminating in a powerful and memorable conclusion. Even decades after its original release, its narrative remains strikingly modern.
That said, some aspects still reflect its retro origins, such as occasionally confusing dungeon layouts and a combat system that can become predictable later on. However, these are minor drawbacks compared to the game’s overall creativity and design ambition.
In the end, LIVE A LIVE is more than just a remake—it’s a showcase of how inventive RPG design can be. If you’re looking for something beyond the typical linear role-playing experience, this game offers a unique and thoughtfully crafted journey.
