This entry completely overhauled the systems used in the previous two games, redesigning everything from character art styles and animation modules to core combat mechanics. The game not only modernized the series visually but also deepened the mythos of the “Orochi Saga,” elevating narrative complexity in fighting games to an unprecedented level.

The story continues after the defeat of Rugal, with the mysterious organization “K’” hosting the tournament. As the competition progresses, protagonist Kyo Kusanagi senses an unprecedentedly dark and ominous force, far purer and more malevolent than Rugal. Behind the tournament lies Chizuru Kagura, one of the heirs of the “Three Sacred Treasures” guarding Orochi’s seal. She aims to gather the strongest fighters to oppose the awakening evil. Ultimately, Goenitz, leader of the Orochi Eight Masters and wielder of wind power, launches a direct assault on the tournament, seeking to seize the seal’s power and revive Orochi. This crisis forces rivals Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami to temporarily set aside their differences and join forces with Chizuru in a battle that could decide the fate of humanity.

In terms of gameplay and systems, KOF ’96 introduced numerous innovations that would define modern fighting games. The most notable change is the refinement of movement: traditional lateral movement was replaced with “Small Jump” and “Medium Jump” options to add depth to aerial attacks, and the standard sidestep was replaced by “Emergency Roll” forward or backward, increasing both aggression and fluidity in combat. Combat mechanics were also significantly revised; many characters’ ranged projectile tools were removed or replaced with close-range attacks, forcing players into more strategic melee engagements. Additionally, the game introduced the “MAX Super Special Move,” a devastating full-screen attack available when health is low and the power gauge is full.
