由東映動畫開發，並於1987年在任天堂紅白機（FC）上推出的《北斗神拳 2：世紀末救世主傳說》，是改編自武論尊與原哲夫同名漫畫巨作的第二部遊戲作品。本作與前作最大的不同在於，故事舞台從最初的拉歐篇移至「天帝篇」，讓玩家得以親身體驗拳四郎為拯救新時代再次挺身而出的熱血旅程。

故事背景設定在拳四郎擊敗世紀末霸主拉歐數年之後。雖然世界暫時恢復秩序，但殘酷的帝都統治者總督賈柯假借天帝之名對人民施行暴政，並懸賞獵殺北斗與南斗的傳人。當年追隨拳四郎的小男孩巴特與小女孩琳兒已長大成人，並組織「北斗軍」反抗暴政。拳四郎感應到宿命的呼喚再次現身，他必須一路擊敗元斗皇拳高手，包括金光之輪的法爾可，最終揭開天帝被囚禁的真相，徹底粉碎賈柯的陰謀。

在操作方面，延續前作的橫向捲軸動作基礎，並加入多項關鍵改良。玩家控制拳四郎使用方向鍵移動、A 鍵跳躍、B 鍵攻擊。最核心的系統在於畫面下方的「北斗七星」指示燈：擊敗特定敵人後會掉落星形道具，每收集一顆星，拳四郎的能力便會進化，從最初只能揮拳，到可以使用踢擊、提升移動速度，甚至大幅增強攻擊威力。

Developed by Toei Animation and released in 1987 for the Nintendo Famicom (FC), “Fist of the North Star 2: Legend of the Century’s End Savior” is the second game adaptation of the legendary manga series by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara. Unlike the first game, which focused on the Raoh arc, this sequel moves the story to the “Ten-Tei Arc,” allowing players to experience Kenshiro’s passionate journey to save the new era firsthand.

The story takes place several years after Kenshiro defeated the post-apocalyptic tyrant Raoh. Although order had temporarily returned to the world, the cruel ruler of the Imperial Capital, Governor Jackal, abuses the name of the “Heavenly Emperor” to impose tyranny and puts bounties on the successors of the Hokuto and Nanto schools. Meanwhile, the boy Bart and the girl Lin, who once followed Kenshiro, have grown up and formed the “Hokuto Army” to resist oppression. Sensing the call of destiny, Kenshiro reappears, facing masters of the Gento Kōken, including Falco, ultimately uncovering the truth behind the Heavenly Emperor’s imprisonment and crushing Jackal’s conspiracy.

In terms of gameplay, Fist of the North Star 2 builds on the side-scrolling action foundation of its predecessor but introduces several key improvements. Players control Kenshiro with the directional pad, jump with the A button, and attack with the B button. The core system revolves around the “Seven Stars” indicator at the bottom of the screen: defeating certain enemies drops star-shaped items, and collecting each star increases Kenshiro’s abilities—from initially only punching, to adding kicks, increasing movement speed, and significantly boosting attack power.

Once all seven stars are collected, Kenshiro enters his strongest state: his jacket bursts open, revealing the seven scars on his chest, and his attack range expands dramatically. Additionally, the game introduces the “Secret Technique” system: during boss battles, striking an enemy’s pressure point at the right moment triggers a cinematic display of the move’s name, recreating the shocking “exploding death” moments from the manga. While the controls feel slightly stiff, the satisfying impact of one punch defeating grunts perfectly captures the essence of the original work.

Critically, the game is praised for being “intense and challenging.” Positive feedback emphasizes the faithful adaptation of the source material: appearances by Falco, Soria, and other Gento masters, along with explosive visual effects, deliver a gratifying experience for manga fans. The soundtrack, inspired by the anime’s heavy metal style, effectively conveys the desolate post-apocalyptic wasteland and tense combat atmosphere.

On the other hand, the game’s high difficulty and low margin for error discouraged casual players. Enemies are densely packed, traps and instant-death hazards are frequent, and character progress resets upon death, making the experience extremely hardcore. Although the controls are not as smooth as games like Mega Man or Super Mario, as an anime adaptation, Fist of the North Star 2 succeeds in creating a post-apocalyptic world filled with violent beauty and heroic spirit within the technical limits of the FC. It remains a cherished nostalgic title among longtime fans of the series.
