由Jaleco於1987年在任天堂紅白機(FC)上推出的《妖怪俱樂部》(Youkai Club/妖怪倶楽部),是一款充滿濃厚東方靈異氛圍的橫向捲軸動作遊戲。在當年以《Castlevania》為代表的恐怖動作遊戲熱潮中,本作憑藉獨特的成長系統與大膽的視覺風格,成功在玩家之間留下深刻印象。

故事圍繞一名平凡少年「阿晃」(Akira)展開。當潛伏於黑暗世界的妖魔首領「加利恩」衝破封印,率領無數妖怪入侵人間,企圖將世界拖入永恆的黑暗之中,人類社會陷入前所未有的危機。就在此時,阿晃意外發現自己體內流淌著來自遠古的除魔血脈。為了守護現實世界,他毅然踏入妖魔橫行的異界,穿越陰森森林、荒廢古宅與詭譎墓穴,最終直闖敵方核心,與邪惡之神展開決戰。整段旅程既是拯救世界的戰鬥,也是少年面對命運的試煉。

在玩法設計上,並不只是單純的動作遊戲。主角以投擲能量波作為主要攻擊方式,操作雖然直觀,但核心樂趣來自於「成長系統」的加入。擊敗敵人後會掉落名為「靈氣」的特殊道具,玩家透過收集靈氣來提升等級,不僅能增加生命值上限,也會讓攻擊範圍、距離與威力產生明顯變化。這種隨著遊戲進程逐步強化角色的設計,讓玩家能夠清楚感受到實力提升的成就感。

除了戰鬥之外,遊戲也相當重視道具的運用。可以取得各種輔助物品,例如暫時定住敵人的道具、清除威脅的閃光彈,或是提供防護的護盾,這些工具在面對難纏敵人或頭目戰時往往成為關鍵。關卡設計則充滿層次感,包含多層地形與隱藏區域,玩家需要在時間限制下快速判斷路線,兼顧操作精準度與策略選擇。

Developed by Jaleco and released in 1987 on the Famicom (NES), Youkai Club (妖怪倶楽部) is a side-scrolling action game steeped in strong Eastern supernatural themes. During an era dominated by horror-action titles like Castlevania, this game stood out for its unique growth system and bold visual design, earning a memorable place among players.

The story follows an ordinary boy named Akira. When a powerful demon lord known as Galion breaks free from his seal and leads a horde of monsters to invade the human world, the balance between realms collapses. As humanity falls into despair, Akira discovers that he carries an ancient bloodline of demon slayers within him. Determined to protect the world, he ventures into a realm filled with sinister creatures, traveling through eerie forests, abandoned mansions, and haunted catacombs. His journey ultimately leads him to the heart of the demonic domain, where he must confront the dark god himself. This adventure is not only a battle to save the world, but also a personal trial of courage and destiny.

In terms of gameplay, Youkai Club goes beyond being a simple action title. Akira attacks by throwing energy projectiles, and while the controls are straightforward, the core experience revolves around its progression system. Enemies drop special items known as “spirit energy,” which players collect to level up. As Akira grows stronger, his maximum health increases, and his attack range, size, and power evolve significantly. This sense of visible growth provides satisfying feedback as players advance through the game.

Beyond combat, the game places strong emphasis on item usage. Players can acquire various support items, such as tools that temporarily freeze enemies, flash bombs to eliminate threats, and shields for defense. These items become essential when dealing with difficult enemies or bosses. The level design is layered and complex, featuring vertical structures and hidden rooms. Players must make quick decisions about their route within a limited time, combining precise control with strategic thinking.

 

Reception for Youkai Club has been mixed but memorable. Its strengths lie in its distinctive visual style and atmosphere. Despite the limitations of the Famicom hardware, the developers created a dark, oppressive world inspired by Japanese folklore, with enemy designs that were both eerie and ahead of their time. Combined with responsive combat and a rewarding growth system, the game offers solid replay value.

However, its high difficulty has also been a major point of criticism. Later stages are filled with instant-death traps and unpredictable enemy behavior. When players fail, they may lose the levels and upgrades they have worked hard to build, creating a punishing cycle that can be difficult to recover from. Even so, for fans of challenging action games, Youkai Club remains a standout hardcore classic, and its haunting music and unsettling atmosphere continue to linger as a vivid part of many players’ childhood memories.
