The Pokémon Stamp Box ~ Pokémon Trading Card Game “Looking Back Beauty” & “Wild Geese Flying Under the Moon” Set, released by Japan Post in 2021, is a highly talked-about limited-edition product that combines traditional Japanese art, postal culture, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game (PTCG). Officially titled “ポケモン切手BOX 見返り美人 月に雁セット”, this release attracted enormous attention from both card players and collectors upon announcement, and is now regarded as one of the most iconic official collaboration collectibles in recent years.
The concept of this stamp box is inspired by classic Japanese ukiyo-e art. One reference is “Mikaeri Bijin” (Looking Back Beauty) by renowned ukiyo-e artist Hishikawa Moronobu, while the other draws from the Edo-period bird-and-flower motif “Tsuki ni Kari” (Wild Geese Under the Moon). Japan Post reinterpreted these culturally significant artworks by integrating Pokémon characters into the compositions, resulting in two exclusive promotional cards: a Pikachu promo card based on Looking Back Beauty, and a Cramorant (ウッウ) promo card inspired by Wild Geese Under the Moon. This fusion of traditional fine art and modern pop culture elevated the Pokémon cards beyond simple game items, positioning them as cultural collectibles.
The product was released on and after August 25, 2021, and unlike standard retail items, it was distributed primarily through a lottery-based sales system exclusive to post offices. This approach was intended to manage overwhelming demand and discourage scalping. Japan Post offered both postcard-based lottery applications and online lottery entries. The postcard applications closed on September 10, 2021 (postmark valid), while the web lottery remained open until September 15, 2021. Winners received physical notification letters around mid-October and were required to complete their purchases in person at their selected post office between late October and mid-November.
Applicants were required to provide full personal details, including postal code, address, name, phonetic reading, contact number, and the designated post office for pickup along with its application number. The strict application process reflected Japan Post’s emphasis on fairness and identity verification. Due to demand far exceeding expectations, Japan Post announced on July 21 that the original production run of 80,000 units would be increased by 20,000, bringing the total to 100,000 units. Even so, the supply was still insufficient to meet market demand.
In terms of contents, the stamp box offered an impressive and well-curated lineup. The set includes a limited-edition commemorative stamp sheet, three specially shaped cards, the “Pokémon Card Game Sword & Shield – Play Anytime, Anywhere Family Card Game”, and the two highly anticipated promo cards: “Looking Back Beauty Pikachu” and “Wild Geese Under the Moon Cramorant.” All items are housed in a custom-designed original storage box featuring a Poké Ball motif, emphasizing both presentation quality and collectability.
In addition to the lottery sales, Japan Post also sold the same set during the Japan International Stamp Exhibition 2021, held from August 25 to August 30, 2021, allowing a limited number of visitors to purchase the product on-site. The official retail price was 4,000 yen (tax included). However, due to limited supply, unique artistic themes, and the exclusivity of the promo cards—which cannot be obtained separately—the set’s value rose rapidly on the secondary market after release.
Overall, the Pokémon Stamp Box ~ Looking Back Beauty & Wild Geese Under the Moon Set represents more than just a card game accessory. It stands as a successful example of cultural crossover, seamlessly blending traditional Japanese art, a national postal institution, and one of the world’s most influential entertainment franchises. The release symbolizes how the Pokémon brand has evolved beyond gaming into the realms of art, heritage, and high-end collectible culture.
