Arabian Dream: Sherazaado (アラビアンドリーム シェラザード) was released on September 3, 1987, for the NintendoFamicom, developed and published by Culture Brain. It is an ambitious and stylistically unique action role-playing game (ARPG). Arriving at a time when The Legend of Zelda had just defined the ARPG framework, this title boldly combined Middle Eastern Arabian mythology, time-travel elements, and dual combat systems of real-time action and command-based turn battles. It became a distinctly exotic and mechanically rich masterpiece in Famicom history.

 

Visually and technically, Arabian Dream showcases Culture Brain’s skill with vibrant color palettes, depicting deserts, oases, mosques, and magical divine realms with remarkable detail. One of the game’s most notable features is its dynamic perspective shifts: exploration of the overworld uses a top-down view, while entering temples or confronting specific enemies transitions the view to side-scrolling action or a command-based battle interface. To save the imprisoned princess and restore peace, he must travel across the past, present, future, and worlds inhabited by gods. Along the journey, the protagonist gathers a cast of distinctive companions—warriors, clerics, and elves—who assist in uncovering the grand conspiracy behind Sabaron. During exploration, players engage in real-time action combat, swinging weapons or casting spells against groups of enemies in a style reminiscent of early Zelda titles. Dodging projectiles and enemy charges requires precise movement. Certain encounters or boss fights trigger a switch to turn-based command battles, where the protagonist and companions can form strategic formations affecting defense, attack, or magic efficiency. Players must issue commands for attacks, defenses, items, or combined magical techniques, balancing strategic depth against the faster-paced action segments.
