Released by Culture Brain in 1990 for the Nintendo Famicom (NES), Flying Dragon 3: Five Dragon Warriors (Flying Dragon 3: 5 Ryuushi / 飛龍の拳III 五人の龍戦士) serves as the final installment of the series on 8-bit hardware and stands as a culmination of its unique blend of fighting, action, and role-playing elements. As a late-era Famicom title, it pushed both visual presentation and system complexity to the limits of the hardware, refining the signature “Shin-Gan” combat system into its most advanced and strategic form.

From a technical and visual standpoint, Flying Dragon 3 demonstrates a high level of polish. Character sprites are larger and more detailed than ever before, with noticeable improvements in musculature and facial expressions during combat sequences, enhancing the intensity of battles. The game’s environments span multiple regions around the world, from ancient Chinese temples and bustling Japanese streets to surreal dimensions within the demon realm, each rendered with a strong sense of atmosphere. Musically, the game retains the series’ energetic martial arts style but features richer sound layering and stronger rhythmic composition. Combined with the flashing effects of special moves, the audiovisual experience closely resembles that of early 1990s fighting anime.

The story continues directly from the previous installment while expanding the overarching narrative. Although the Dark Dragon organization was weakened before, the true mastermind—the Great Demon God—remains active, seeking to collect five legendary Sacred Armors in order to dominate the universe. In response, the protagonist Ryuhi embarks on a global journey to reunite with four other Dragon Warriors scattered across the world. These include Shoryu, a master of karate; Goryu, a powerful wrestler; Minryu, a swift and agile fighter; and Kujaku, a female warrior with unique abilities. As the story unfolds, these five heroes, each inheriting the spirit of the dragon, unite to confront the Great Demon God in the depths of the demon realm, culminating in a final battle that determines the fate of the world. The narrative centers on themes of destiny, unity, and self-transcendence, presenting a classic heroic tale in its most complete form.

In terms of gameplay, Flying Dragon 3 refines the series’ mechanics to their peak. The Shin-Gan system reaches its most complete iteration, requiring players not only to react to high, mid, and low attacks and defenses but also to handle advanced mechanics such as variable attack trajectories and counterattacks. Successfully blocking enemy combinations allows players to build up fighting spirit, which can then be unleashed through powerful ultimate techniques. This system transforms combat from simple reaction-based encounters into a dynamic exchange of offense and defense, closely mirroring real martial arts strategy.

One of the game’s defining features is the ability to switch freely between five Dragon Warriors. Each character possesses distinct attributes and combat styles, requiring players to adapt their approach depending on the opponent. Ryuhi offers balanced performance, Goryu delivers immense power at the cost of speed, while Kujaku excels in ranged support. This diversity encourages strategic planning and significantly enhances replay value.

The integration between action stages and versus combat is also deeper than before. In side-scrolling levels, players engage in platforming and combat while gaining experience points to level up. These levels directly influence performance in later boss fights, as higher levels result in greater health and stronger attacks. This interwoven system creates a cohesive gameplay loop where action and RPG elements reinforce one another.

Critically, Flying Dragon 3 was highly praised for its depth and content. Reviewers recognized it as one of the most advanced titles on the Famicom, successfully transforming the Shin-Gan system into a competitive and engaging combat framework. The multi-character system added significant strategic variety and longevity. While some players found the password save system cumbersome and the late-game difficulty extremely demanding—requiring near frame-perfect reactions—these aspects also contributed to its reputation as a hardcore classic. Overall, the game is widely regarded as one of the finest fighting RPG hybrids on the Famicom, and its multi-character combat design would go on to influence later entries in the series as well as other RPG-infused fighting games.
