Telenet RPG

Edia will release the Telenet RPG Collection on November 27, 2025, featuring three titles developed by Wolf Team that originally debuted on the Super Famicom: Dark Kingdom, Hiou-Den: Oath with the Monsters, and Daichi Yūshi: The Beat of Sea and Wind (Noigier – Umi to Kaze no Kodou). Although these games were not considered mainstream hits at the time, they have since gained a cult following due to their unique perspectives, extreme system designs, and high difficulty levels. They are often described as “迷作” — games that are challenging to approach but full of distinctive charm. This collection brings these titles fully to the Nintendo Switch, along with a digital archive, allowing players to experience the creativity and intensity of 1990s game development firsthand.
In terms of story, Dark Kingdom subverts the traditional “hero versus demon lord” trope by putting players in the role of a soldier in the demon lord’s army, whose objective is to defeat human heroes. This role reversal transforms the familiar “hero” into an enemy to be vanquished, completely flipping the narrative tension. Hiou-Den is a tactical simulation RPG in which players command an army of monsters to exact revenge on human kingdoms. The gameplay requires careful recruitment of various monsters and strategic use of terrain and tactics to overcome human forces. Meanwhile, Daichi Yūshi: The Beat of Sea and Wind leans more toward action RPG gameplay, emphasizing fast-paced progression where the challenge lies not in a sprawling story but in completing the game in the shortest possible time, even fostering a speedrunning culture. Despite their differing styles, all three titles break away from conventional “classic RPG” formulas, forcing players to embrace unconventional challenges.
Regarding gameplay and systems, each title has its own distinctive features. Dark Kingdom retains traditional RPG mechanics such as party formation and turn-based combat, but branching storylines and shifts in allegiance make player choices particularly consequential. Hiou-Den emphasizes strategic management, requiring careful allocation of monster forces and timing of attacks and defenses, directly influencing battle outcomes. Daichi Yūshi offers real-time action gameplay that is intuitive to control but demands quick reflexes and high skill due to its rapid pace. None of these games allow progression through simple grinding; instead, they rigorously test patience, strategy, and skill.
Market reception at the time was highly polarized. Many players found the games overly difficult, with systems that were not user-friendly, and the high level of challenge could be frustrating. Yet it was precisely these qualities that gave the games a “challenger’s appeal.” For RPG enthusiasts willing to explore alternative perspectives, the games offered experimental mechanics and fresh experiences. Now, with Edia’s Telenet RPG Collection, these titles are not only faithfully ported but also enhanced with the digital archive Gift Selection, which includes character designs, development notes, and planning documents, providing a rare glimpse into game development from over 30 years ago. This archival content offers significant value for nostalgic players and game history enthusiasts alike.
Overall, the Telenet RPG Collection is more than a nostalgic revival—it’s an opportunity to rediscover a set of “unorthodox RPGs” in Japanese gaming history. Once overlooked for being unconventional, these titles now stand out in today’s diverse gaming market. For RPG fans, this collection serves as both a challenge and a retrospective, with designs that once seemed inaccessible now revealing their unique value through a modern lens.
