DreadOut Remastered Collection – Full English Introduction

Publisher Soft Source Publishing and developer Digital Happiness have officially announced that DreadOut Remastered Collection will be released on January 16, 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, with a Steam version arriving on May 14, 2025.

This remastered collection includes two cult-classic Indonesian horror titles — the original DreadOut (2014) and its spin-off DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark (2016). Please note that DreadOut 2 is not included in this collection.

Story and Setting

DreadOut tells the story of Linda, a high school girl who, along with her classmates, becomes lost during a school trip. They stumble upon an old, forgotten town—quiet and desolate, yet hiding terrifying secrets beneath its stillness. As night falls, the group realizes they are not alone. Spirits and supernatural entities from beyond the mortal realm begin to awaken.

Linda soon discovers she possesses mysterious psychic abilities, allowing her to sense and combat these restless spirits. Armed only with her smartphone and SLR camera, she must capture and banish these ghosts while uncovering the dark truth behind the cursed town. Her courage, quick thinking, and choices will determine not only her fate but also that of her friends.

The companion title, DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark, expands the lore by placing Linda inside The Mirror Realm, a distorted dimension connected to eight haunted domains. Guided (or perhaps deceived) by the Mysterious Lady in Red, Linda must confront over 13 types of Indonesian ghosts, each with unique appearances and terrifying backstories. Every portal she enters brings new horrors, and the choices she makes decide whether she can escape — or become trapped forever.

Gameplay

DreadOut Remastered Collection is a third-person supernatural survival horror game inspired by classic Asian horror films. Players control Linda as she explores abandoned schools, temples, and ghost towns filled with jump scares, environmental puzzles, and paranormal encounters.

Using her smartphone as a ghost-detecting camera, players must photograph spirits to weaken or exorcise them. The SLR camera offers higher damage but slower handling, creating tension in every encounter. Between each battle, players must explore eerie environments, uncover lore-rich documents, and solve puzzles to advance the story.

Both games feature improved visuals, refined controls, and enhanced performance through a modern upgrade to the latest Unity engine. The remaster also includes:

• Sharper textures and smoother shaders
• Upscaled cinematic cutscenes for higher resolution
• More responsive camera and movement controls

The series gained a cult following worldwide, praised for combining Fatal Frame-style gameplay with a Southeast Asian cultural identity. Critics appreciated its ambition and eerie setting, while players valued the authentic supernatural storytelling and terrifying audio cues.
