“Ultraman: Messenger of the Land of Light” (Japanese: ウルトラマン 光の国の使者) is a fighting action game released by Bandai for the WonderSwan Color (WSC) on June 21, 2001. Although it is nominally a remake of the classic arcade and Super Famicom title Ultraman, a large portion of its content was reworked, making the overall presentation and system feel almost like an entirely new game. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Eiji Tsuburaya’s birth, the development team strived to recreate the charm of the original within the limitations of the WSC hardware. From the opening animation to background music, character movements, and voice cues, the game displays remarkable craftsmanship, especially in the detailed animations of each Ultra Hero and monster. Players who pre-ordered the game even received a special diorama featuring “Ultraman vs. Baltan,” which greatly delighted collectors.

The battle system follows traditional fighting-action mechanics but places stronger emphasis on replicating the pacing and dramatic style of the Ultraman tokusatsu series. If the player defeats an enemy with a special move, the fight ends immediately. However, defeating the opponent with regular attacks only puts the monster into a stunned state—players must follow up with additional strikes or wait for the downed countdown to finish in order to claim victory. The A and B buttons are used for close-range combat, X changes performance modes, while Y triggers special moves. When close to the enemy, players can also perform throws. Certain commands can be used to execute ground-pressure attacks when the enemy is knocked down, further reinforcing the game’s tokusatsu-like action rhythm. Special attacks require building a dedicated gauge, which increases over time or when landing hits, forcing players to balance offense and defense.

The primary mode is Story Mode, in which the player controls the original Ultraman. The progression follows the basic structure of the TV series: a brief story introduction, Science Patrol briefing, monster appearance, and finally Ultraman entering battle. Although the plot is heavily condensed, many small details beloved by fans remain intact, including monster data screens, simple cinematic cuts, and the signature “Gungun Cut” transitions. Event scenes incorporate collaged photos of actual Science Patrol actors, giving the handheld title a strong Showa-era tokusatsu flavor. Special events from the original series also occur during battles, such as accidentally destroying a power plant when throwing Neronga, or triggering the “Ultra Water Stream” finishing animation after defeating Gamila. Story Mode also includes the “Ultraman Index,” a rating system that evaluates the player’s performance and rewards them for finishing battles with accurate, series-faithful special moves.

The game also includes a Versus Mode, which requires a dedicated battle card to unlock. Players can freely choose Ultramen or monsters to fight against each other, and the mode supports link-cable multiplayer. Another major feature is the Training Mode, which allows players to raise six characters: Ultraman, Alien Baltan, Fake Ultraman, Alien Mefilas, Zetton, and a hidden character. Characters gain EXP through battles, improving attributes such as punch power and kick power. Trained characters can be used in Versus Mode or traded with friends, greatly enhancing replay value for a handheld title.

The character roster faithfully recreates the original series, including Ultraman, Bemlar, Alien Baltan, Neronga, Antlar, Red King, Gabora, Fake Ultraman, Kemular, Gamila, Gomora, Alien Mefilas, and Zetton—each featuring their own unique attacks and actions based on the official lore. Bemlar boasts high-speed heat rays, Antlar can pull enemies in with magnetic beams, Gomora has powerful super armor, Mefilas offers exceptional action freedom, while Zetton wields devastating counter-beams. Ultraman himself comes with fully recreated signature moves such as the Specium Ray, Ultra Slash, and Reflective Barrier, with even the complete animation of the Specium Ray faithfully reproduced—something extremely rare for handheld games of that era.

In terms of reception, “Ultraman: Messenger of the Land of Light” was highly praised among tokusatsu fans despite the WSC’s limited hardware capabilities. Its faithful recreation of the Ultraman atmosphere, solid gameplay, and rich Showa-era presentation earned it a strong reputation within the fan community. Many consider it one of the most polished action titles available on the WonderSwan Color, with its animation quality and attention to detail remaining impressive even today. Although sales were modest due to the platform’s limited reach, the game is regarded in collector circles as a hidden gem—and one of the most earnest and lovingly crafted adaptations of the original Ultraman ever produced.
