"Up" (Japanese title: カールじいさんの空飛ぶ家, English original: Up) is an action-adventure game based on Pixar’s 2009 animated film of the same name. Developed by Heavy Iron Studios and published by THQ, the Wii version was released in the same year. The game recreates the touching and adventurous journey from the movie, expanding on the emotional bonds between characters—especially the relationship between the elderly Carl Fredricksen and the young Wilderness Explorer, Russell—through interactive gameplay.

The story closely follows the film’s narrative. It begins with Carl, a widowed old man, attempting to fulfill the dream he shared with his late wife by lifting his house into the sky with thousands of balloons, aiming to reach the mythical Paradise Falls in South America. However, he unexpectedly discovers Russell clinging to the porch as a stowaway. From there, a whimsical and danger-filled journey unfolds. The game retains major locations and characters from the original movie, including Dug, the talking dog; the villainous explorer Charles Muntz; and the towering, exotic bird Kevin. To enrich the experience, the game also introduces original events and gameplay scenarios beyond the movie’s storyline, allowing players to take on new challenges within the familiar world.

Gameplay heavily incorporates motion controls using both the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Players can control both Carl and Russell, either by switching between them in single-player or through two-player cooperative mode. Carl, being elderly, moves more slowly but can use his cane to attack or clear obstacles. Russell, on the other hand, is nimble and capable of climbing, jumping, and using his Wilderness Explorer tools—like ropes and binoculars—to solve puzzles and advance. Many puzzles and obstacles require teamwork, emphasizing the complementary nature of their abilities and the importance of cooperation.

The levels offer a variety of gameplay styles, ranging from traditional side-scrolling platforming and exploration to zip-lining, stealth segments, chase sequences, and environmental puzzles. Some stages switch to a flight-based perspective, such as guiding Carl’s floating house to avoid gusts of wind and airborne hazards. Combat remains simple but involves fending off various wildlife enemies and Muntz’s mechanical forces, often requiring creative use of tools and surroundings.

Visually, the game adopts a cartoonish style in keeping with Pixar’s aesthetic. While the Wii’s hardware limits prevent the game from matching the film’s visual fidelity, the character models preserve Carl’s stern demeanor, Russell’s wide-eyed charm, and the humorous traits of animal companions. The environments—lush jungles, cascading waterfalls, airships—are brightly colored and designed to evoke a whimsical, fantastical atmosphere. The audio design also stays true to the film, with familiar themes, expressive voice lines, and a heartwarming score that reinforces the story’s emotional core.

In terms of reception, the game was primarily aimed at children and families. Its straightforward design and low difficulty made it well-suited for younger players or cooperative play between parents and kids. While not complex in terms of game mechanics, critics generally appreciated its faithful adaptation of the film’s tone and characters. The co-op mode, in particular, was widely praised as the game’s standout feature—encouraging shared exploration and puzzle-solving, and enhancing the joy of playing together.

However, some criticism was directed at its short length, low replay value, simplistic enemy AI, and somewhat repetitive level design. For older or more experienced gamers, the lack of challenge and the linear story progression—offering little in terms of branching paths or open-world exploration—might make it feel underwhelming compared to more advanced adventure games of the time.

All in all, Up on the Wii is a standard movie tie-in game that doesn’t break new ground in gameplay innovation but succeeds in extending the spirit of the film in a cheerful, heartfelt way. It’s a gentle interactive journey about dreams, companionship, and adventure. For fans of the movie, or those looking to share a light and emotional co-op experience with family or friends, this game offers a charming gateway to Paradise Falls.
