To stop this disaster, a mysterious girl named Merlina seeks Sonic’s help and gives him the talking sword, Caliburn. Sonic must become the "Knight of the Sword," embark on a journey to find the other Knights of the Round Table (who are actually familiar Sonic characters like Knuckles, Shadow, and Blaze), and defeat the corrupted King Arthur. In terms of gameplay, Sonic and the Black Knight is a third-person action game. It retains the series’ iconic "high-speed running" as its base but layers in heavy sword-fighting mechanics. Players use the Wii Remote to swing their sword, simulating real swordplay movements, and must alternate between attacking and defending while running. The auto-forward movement mechanic from Secret Rings is still present but is enhanced with more branching paths, quick-time events, and platforming sections.
