This title is a side-scrolling action game released on April 17, 1986, for the Family Computer by Bandai (now Bandai Namco Entertainment). It is based on Shigeru Mizuki’s nationally beloved manga GeGeGe no Kitaro. Riding the wave of the Famicom boom and the popularity of the anime’s third series, the game became a major hit, shipping 1.25 million copies. Overseas, it was released under the title Ninja Kid, with the characters replaced by ninjas.

 

GeGeGe no Kitaro: Youkai Daimakyo stands out as a character-based game that goes beyond expectations, offering surprisingly refined action gameplay and a wide variety of stages that make full use of the Famicom’s capabilities. Players control the protagonist Kitaro as he ventures through seven distinct “demonic realms.” The graphics closely follow the design of the anime’s third series, and familiar allies such as Medama-Oyaji and Sunakake Baba appear as support characters. The music faithfully recreates the anime’s theme song using the Famicom sound hardware, immediately immersing players in Kitaro’s world from the moment the game begins.

The story takes place in the “Great Yokai Realm,” where powerful monsters have cursed various regions of Japan—mountains, oceans, and forests—turning them into dangerous territories that threaten humanity. To restore peace, Kitaro sets out alongside his father, Medama-Oyaji, to confront these supernatural forces. At the end of each area, players face iconic bosses from the original series, such as Nurarihyon, Backbeard, and Mokumokuren. Through these intense battles, Kitaro gradually pushes deeper into the heart of the demonic realm.

The control system is straightforward yet requires strategic use of Kitaro’s unique abilities. Players move with the directional pad, jump with the A button, and attack with the B button. His primary weapon, the “Hair Needle,” allows rapid attacks, but can be swapped for the “Remote Geta,” a powerful boomerang-like weapon obtained during gameplay. Under certain conditions, Kitaro can also throw his “Chanchanko,” which can deflect enemy projectiles and provide special effects.

The stages themselves feature creative design elements, including multiple house entrances that lead to hidden paths, items, or boss encounters. Deciding whether to enter or skip these areas adds an exploration aspect to the gameplay. Additionally, collecting certain items summons allies who significantly alter gameplay mechanics—for example, riding Ittan-momen enables free aerial movement, while Nurikabe acts as a defensive shield against enemy attacks.

In terms of reception, the game is widely regarded as one of the standout action titles of the early Famicom era. Critics praised it for breaking away from the stigma that character-based games were often low quality, highlighting its strong gameplay design and depth. However, the later stages are notoriously difficult, featuring off-screen enemies and numerous instant-death traps that challenged many young players at the time. Despite this, the demanding difficulty became part of its appeal, helping it achieve “million-seller” status. It remains one of Bandai’s most successful early Famicom releases and continues to be fondly remembered by retro gaming enthusiasts today.
