On June 28, 2025, the Huaxi Branch of the Public Security Bureau in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province, issued a new fraud prevention alert, warning the public about a rising scam that exploits people’s trust in acquaintances. The scam typically involves a request for “voting assistance,” which ultimately leads to financial theft.

Here’s what happened: A local resident, Ms. Cao, received a message on QQ from someone appearing to be a familiar “friend.” The message read: “Please help vote for my child! Just enter a verification code, it’s urgent!” Trusting the sender, Ms. Cao clicked the link provided and entered the verification code she received via SMS.

What she didn’t realize was that the scammer had already initiated a remote hijacking attempt. Mere minutes after entering the code, her phone was taken over remotely. When she managed to restart the device, a series of bank deduction alerts had already arrived — her account had been fraudulently accessed and more than 6,000 yuan had been stolen.

Alarmingly, the very next day, another resident in the same district, Mr. Liu, received an identical message asking for help voting. Fortunately, he had seen the police warning in advance and recognized the scam before falling for it.

According to the police, this type of fraud leverages compromised social media accounts and the trust built through personal relationships. The scammers pose as friends or family and request seemingly harmless actions — like voting or entering a verification code. In reality, the link is a phishing site designed to collect the victim’s verification code. Once obtained, scammers use it to reset passwords, gain access to financial apps or linked accounts, and steal money — all within minutes.

This method has become increasingly common in recent weeks and is often disguised as participation in “talent competitions,” “online voting events,” or other plausible scenarios. The scammers create a false sense of urgency to catch victims off guard. The police strongly urge the public to stay alert and remind each other to be cautious. Never trust messages asking for verification codes, even if they come from someone you know. Always double-check the identity of the sender through another communication method.

The police also emphasize that SMS verification codes are the last line of defense for personal account and financial security. Once disclosed, it’s akin to handing your keys to a thief. To protect yourself from such scams, avoid clicking on unfamiliar links, strengthen account security with two-factor authentication, change passwords regularly, enable real-time alerts, and pay attention to official anti-fraud warnings. Being vigilant could save you and your family from significant financial loss.
