Serious Military Clash Erupts Between Thailand and Cambodia Along Border – Worst Since 2011

A serious military clash recently erupted between Thailand and Cambodia along their disputed border, marking the most intense confrontation between the two nations since 2011. The root of the conflict lies in the lack of clearly demarcated borders, particularly in historically contested areas such as Preah Vihear and Ta Muen Thom Temples. These locations have long been flashpoints in the territorial disputes. In recent months, military friction has escalated, with repeated skirmishes. In May, an exchange of fire led to the death of Cambodian soldiers. Cambodia also accused Thailand of planting landmines along the border, which injured Thai soldiers—further aggravating tensions.

On July 24, 2025, the situation dramatically escalated when Cambodian forces launched multiple rocket attacks targeting areas in Thailand’s Surin Province, striking civilian infrastructure including a gas station and a hospital. At least two Thai civilians were killed, and several others were injured, including children. In response, the Thai government ordered the evacuation of nearby villages and deployed six F-16 fighter jets to launch airstrikes on Cambodian military facilities, destroying the 8th and 9th Infantry Battalions of the Cambodian army.

The military conflict quickly intensified. Thailand shut down all border checkpoints with Cambodia and expelled Cambodian diplomats, plunging bilateral relations into a state of severe crisis. Cambodia retaliated with its own measures, and intense firefights broke out at no fewer than six locations along the border. Over 40,000 Thai villagers were reportedly displaced from their homes due to the violence.

The outbreak of hostilities has raised serious concerns in the international community. The United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have both called for restraint and urged the two sides to resolve their differences through diplomatic dialogue. Cambodia has submitted the case to the UN Security Council and is seeking support from its allies, including China, which has expressed willingness to mediate and promote regional peace and stability.

This escalation reflects not only long-standing historical disputes over border demarcation, but also the worsening situation caused by landmine deployment and mutual accusations over military activities. The loss of civilian lives and growing insecurity along the border underscore the seriousness of the situation. The military standoff has driven bilateral relations to a freezing point, while also threatening peace and stability across the broader region.

Resolving this crisis will require sustained diplomatic negotiations and active international mediation to prevent further escalation and to protect the safety and well-being of border communities.
