The incident began on July 22, when Ms. Chen (a pseudonym) from Shenzhen purchased a box of “Ma Liu Ji Hot and Sour Vermicelli” at a local Costco store for 65.9 RMB. The box contained eight individual servings. However, just three days later, on July 25, when she opened one of the packages to prepare it, she discovered that the vermicelli cake inside was moldy and emitted a strong, pungent odor.
