Recently, a traffic incident in mainland China has sparked widespread public debate. A woman was allegedly engaging in a “staged accident” (commonly known as peng ci) when she was accidentally run over and killed by a passing vehicle. However, the story did not end there—her family later demanded compensation of one million RMB from the female driver, claiming the driver’s actions had caused her death.
According to surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts, the woman suddenly rushed toward a normally moving vehicle, seemingly attempting to create a traffic accident for monetary gain. Caught off guard by the sudden situation, the female driver was unable to react in time, resulting in the fatal accident. After the incident, the police arrived at the scene to investigate and retrieved nearby surveillance footage. Initial findings indicated that the driver had no intent to harm and that the deceased bore significant fault for the incident.
Shockingly, despite clear evidence showing the woman likely caused the accident herself, her family still demanded a one-million-RMB payout, insisting the driver should bear full responsibility for her death. Once the case went to court, the judge stated that the deceased was primarily at fault, having engaged in highly dangerous and illegal behavior. The judge further noted that the driver acted without malice or major negligence. As such, the family’s claim not only lacked legal basis but was considered “wishful thinking.”
In the end, the court dismissed the family’s compensation claim entirely, ruling that the female driver bore no liability in the case. The verdict triggered heated discussions online, with many netizens praising it as a fair protection for drivers and a warning against peng ci schemes. Drivers also reminded each other to stay calm in suspected staged accident scenarios, avoid direct confrontation, and call the police immediately to prevent legal and financial risks.
This incident not only exposed the dangers behind peng ci scams but also brought greater public attention to traffic safety and judicial fairness.
