The fierce clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk region have now extended to strikes inside Russian territory. According to a statement released by the Russian Ministry of Defense on the 21st, Russian troops successfully seized control of the settlement of Aleksandro-Shultino, located about 40 kilometers north of Donetsk city, within the past day. This settlement, adjacent to the city of Kostyantynivka, is considered a strategic point for Russia’s advance from the southeast. Full control of the area would open a crucial corridor toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, carrying significant implications for the future of the campaign. At the same time, Russia reported that it had deployed precision weapons and attack drones to launch a series of concentrated strikes against Ukraine’s defense-industrial enterprises, energy infrastructure, military airfield facilities, tactical missile system positions, as well as ammunition depots and supply warehouses—demonstrating Moscow’s intent to further degrade Ukraine’s combat capabilities and logistics.

Ukraine, however, released a conflicting account. The Ukrainian military claimed that the 5th Independent Heavy Mechanized Brigade had retaken most of the Tovstoye area in Donetsk under its control. Ukrainian media further reported that airborne assault units had launched offensive operations, clearing Russian troops from the villages of Zolotyi Kolodiaz and Petrivka, in an effort to reestablish battlefield advantages in certain local areas.

The fighting has not been confined to the Donetsk frontline. On the same day, Ukraine announced that its drone forces, working in coordination with other units, carried out strikes on targets inside Russian territory, including the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in Russia’s Rostov region. The attack triggered multiple explosions within the refinery, highlighting Kyiv’s strategic objective of extending the battlefield into Russia and targeting energy and logistical facilities. In addition, Ukrainian forces employed long-range drones to strike Russian drone storage sites and logistics hubs in Donetsk, as well as a fuel supply base in Russia’s Voronezh region—underscoring Ukraine’s ongoing tactical efforts to disrupt Russian supply lines and sustainment capabilities.

Overall, both Russia and Ukraine have claimed battlefield successes, reflecting the continued deadlock and tug-of-war on the frontlines. Russia emphasizes its steady advance and capture of strategic positions, while Ukraine underscores its local counteroffensives and ability to strike targets deep inside Russian territory. This intertwining of information warfare and military operations illustrates the complexity of the conflict, underscoring once again that the war is not merely about territorial control but also a contest of strategy and narratives.
