Humanitarian relief efforts for Gaza have once again become the focus of global attention. On the evening of September 1, a fleet known as the “Global Resilience Fleet” (Freedom Flotilla – Global Resilience Fleet) set sail from the port of Barcelona, Spain, carrying large quantities of humanitarian aid and aiming to reach Gaza by mid-September. The flotilla brings together volunteers from 44 countries and regions, with around 20 ships currently participating.
According to Reuters footage, as the fleet departed, chants of “Free Palestine” echoed throughout the port of Barcelona, creating a solemn and passionate atmosphere. The departure had originally been scheduled for the previous day, but adverse weather forced the ships to return to port and wait until the storm had passed. Foreign media also reported that dozens more vessels are expected to join later this week, potentially making this the largest maritime effort to challenge Israel’s blockade since the outbreak of the latest round of the Israel-Palestine conflict in October 2023.
However, the mission faces an uncertain future. In recent months, the Israeli military has intercepted multiple aid vessels attempting to reach Gaza, raising concerns that the “Global Resilience Fleet” could meet the same fate. International observers believe the action is not only about delivering supplies but also serves as a symbolic protest against Israel’s blockade and a powerful reminder of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
According to a report released by UN agencies on August 22, more than 500,000 people in Gaza are facing famine. This marks the first time famine has been officially declared in the Middle East, highlighting the severity of the situation. Since the outbreak of the conflict in October 2023, Israel’s military operations and continued blockade of Gaza have led to a dramatic deterioration in humanitarian conditions.
The latest figures from Gaza’s health authorities show that Israeli actions have resulted in more than 63,000 deaths, including 124 children who died from malnutrition. This grim reality has fueled growing international condemnation of Israel’s military campaign and blockade, while underscoring the humanitarian mission and political significance carried by the “Global Resilience Fleet.”
