Apple’s annual fall event this year was held at its Cupertino headquarters, with the spotlight firmly on the newly launched iPhone 17 series. This generation has been hailed by many media outlets and netizens as the “most sincere” update in recent years—not only because of significant breakthroughs in design and performance, but also because Apple defied widespread expectations of a price hike by offering even greater value for money.
The new lineup includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the all-new iPhone Air. The iPhone Air made its debut as the “thinnest iPhone ever,” measuring just 5.6mm in thickness and weighing only 165 grams, making it one of the highlights of the event. Official pricing shows the iPhone 17 starting at RMB 5,999, with storage doubled to 256GB at no extra cost. The iPhone Air starts at RMB 7,999; the iPhone 17 Pro at RMB 8,999; while the top-end iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at RMB 9,999, and for the first time offers a massive 2TB storage option priced as high as RMB 17,999. All models will be available for preorder on September 12 at 8 p.m. and will officially go on sale on September 19.
The standard iPhone 17, while continuing its minimalist design, brings a number of surprises. It features a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and ProMotion technology, reaching peak brightness of 3,000 nits for doubled outdoor visibility. The screen is protected by the new Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims is three times more scratch resistant. The imaging system has seen a major upgrade with a 48MP hybrid ultra-wide camera, while the main lens supports 2x optical zoom and delivers four times higher resolution for greater detail. The front-facing camera introduces the new “Center Stage” function, automatically adjusting framing for more dynamic selfies and video calls. Battery life has also improved significantly—up to eight hours longer than the iPhone 16—and a 10-minute charge can provide up to eight hours of video playback. At its core, the device is powered by the new A19 chip, delivering around 20% more performance than the previous A18.
On the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, Apple has doubled down on high-end positioning. Both models introduce a new “raised platform” design, enhancing recognition while creating extra space for larger batteries and antennas—giving them the largest battery capacities in iPhone history and stronger connectivity. The Pro series is built from unibody aluminum and, for the first time, incorporates a vapor chamber cooling system, allowing the A19 Pro chip to fully unleash its power. The chip features a 6-core CPU and 6-core GPU, with GPU performance up to three times faster than its predecessor—particularly optimized for gaming and advanced image processing. The rear camera system includes three 48MP lenses, with the Pro Max exclusively offering a periscope telephoto lens capable of 6x optical zoom. The Pro has a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max boasts a 6.9-inch panel, both reaching peak brightness of 3,500 nits, supporting 120Hz ProMotion, and protected by the latest Ceramic Shield. Color options include Deep Blue, Cosmic Orange, and Silver.
As for the iPhone Air, it was the “surprise entry” of the event. With its ultra-thin 5.6mm body (excluding the camera bump) and feather-light 165g weight, it sets a new record as the slimmest iPhone ever. Although equipped with only a single 48MP hybrid camera, its design and materials stand out, featuring an aerospace-grade titanium frame that balances lightness and durability. It runs on the A19 Pro chip, with GPU performance boosted threefold just like the Pro series. Notably, the iPhone Air supports only eSIM, and in China, the service is currently limited to China Unicom, meaning users on China Mobile or China Telecom may not yet be able to take advantage of it.
From market and community reactions, the standard iPhone 17 has emerged as a hot topic thanks to its attractive RMB 5,999 price point, high-refresh display, and doubled 256GB storage. The Pro series secures its professional and premium positioning with powerhouse performance and advanced imaging. Meanwhile, the Air represents Apple’s bold new step in design and materials, appealing to consumers who value lightness and aesthetics.
Overall, the iPhone 17 series delivers notable upgrades across design, performance, imaging, and battery life, while also balancing pricing strategy and product diversity, ensuring there is something for every type of consumer. Whether it’s the value-driven standard edition, the performance-focused Pro models, or the ultra-thin Air, this generation of iPhones clearly demonstrates Apple’s renewed commitment to both product sincerity and market strategy.
