In the early hours of September 5, local time, Ukraine’s 14th Drone Regiment launched a strike on Ryazan, located about 200 kilometers southeast of Moscow. Shortly after, reports emerged of an explosion at a local oil refinery. Footage from the scene showed a massive fireball rising into the night sky, with flames and thick smoke spreading across Ryazan. The blast was so powerful that it could reportedly be heard even in the outskirts of Moscow.
The Ryazan refinery is one of Russia’s four largest refineries, with an annual output of 17.1 million tons, accounting for 6.1% of the country’s total production. Given its proximity to the capital, the attack could significantly affect Moscow’s energy supply. Kyiv later confirmed responsibility for the strike, while satellite images from NASA detected the fire at the refinery site.
This was not the first time the refinery had been targeted. Back in early August, Ukraine launched a major strike on the same facility, which was seen as a symbolic escalation in its renewed campaign against Russia’s energy infrastructure. Now, the refinery has once again become a critical target. While the blaze in Ryazan lit up the night, Ukrainian drones also struck Russian-occupied territories in the east.
In Luhansk, Ukrainian forces hit a major fuel depot, triggering a large-scale fire. That depot served as a supply hub for Russia’s 20th and 41st Armies, whose main operations are concentrated in the strategically important Donbas region. By crippling this fuel base, Ukraine aims to weaken Russia’s combat capability in Donbas, with officials suggesting that this attack is only the beginning.
Meanwhile, another Ukrainian strike hit the Yelets battery plant in Lipetsk, marking the facility’s third attack. The plant is known for producing drone batteries for Russian forces and even provides power units for aviation and naval systems. With these strikes, Ukraine continues to undermine Russia’s military supply chain while showcasing the expanding reach of its drone warfare strategy.
