The debate had invited four candidates, including Cheng Li-wun, Lo Chih-chiang, and Chang Ya-chung. Hau Lung-bin, meanwhile, opted not to attend and instead traveled south to meet Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu. Hau’s absence only reinforced the impression of a fractured and unenthusiastic campaign atmosphere. Commentators noted that the KMT has long displayed a peculiar pattern: when the party is losing or in decline, no one wants to shoulder the burdens of chairmanship, which involve heavy fundraising pressures due to the party’s massive financial liabilities. Yet when the party shows signs of revival, numerous contenders suddenly emerge—many of whom lack sufficient political experience or credibility—seeking to capitalize on the moment.

This debate therefore reflected not only differences in candidates’ positions on cross-strait policy, but also the KMT’s structural problems.
