Former jade seller and small-time livestreamer Zhu Xianmei has become a notorious figure after marrying Baō Junlong, the son of a Northern Myanmar warlord. Once an obscure online personality, Zhu leveraged her looks and charm to enter the world of warlord families in Myanmar’s conflict-ridden northern regions. With Baō’s protection and backing, she transformed from a modest jewelry seller into what many now call a “femme fatale,” using her new identity as a “warlord’s wife” to lure young Chinese women into Myanmar under the illusion of luxury and wealth.

According to reports from Chinese and Southeast Asian media, Zhu marketed a seductive fantasy through her livestreams — the “dream of becoming a warlord’s wife.” She flaunted mansions, cars, and gold jewelry, creating an illusion of power and glamour. Many women from China, especially from Yunnan, were captivated by her supposed success and promises of high-paying jobs or romantic opportunities in Northern Myanmar. However, once these women crossed the border, their situation turned into a nightmare.

Upon arrival, most of the victims were quickly stripped of their freedom and delivered to one of four major telecommunications fraud compounds in Northern Myanmar, where they were either forced into scam operations or coerced into prostitution. Those who resisted faced violence, imprisonment, or worse. Meanwhile, Zhu Xianmei and her husband’s family reportedly profited immensely from this human trafficking network, acting as intermediaries between warlord-backed protection groups and criminal enterprises.

This scandal has triggered outrage in both China and Myanmar, with many calling for joint law enforcement action to dismantle the criminal networks that sustain the telecom fraud and human trafficking industries in the region. Zhu’s case has become symbolic of a broader issue: the dark nexus between online influencer culture, organized crime, and the exploitation of women.

Today, Zhu Xianmei is viewed not as a glamorous livestream celebrity, but as a modern-day “snake beauty” — a woman who used charm and deception to lure her compatriots into one of Southeast Asia’s most dangerous underworlds, turning dreams of wealth into nightmares of enslavement.
