From last night until early this morning, Russia launched one of its largest aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent months. According to Ukrainian officials, the Russian military deployed 109 drones of various types along with three “Iskander-M / KN-23” ballistic missiles in a massive overnight strike. Ukraine’s air defense forces successfully intercepted or neutralized 73 drones, but several managed to breach defenses, inflicting significant damage and casualties across multiple regions.
In total, three missiles and 36 drones hit 21 different targets, while debris fell across four regions — Sumy, Chernihiv, Donetsk, and Kharkiv. The widespread strikes caused severe damage to infrastructure and disrupted civilian life in several cities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russian drones attacked a railway station in Sumy Oblast on the night of October 4, injuring at least 30 people, including both staff and passengers. Zelensky condemned the attack as a deliberate strike on civilian infrastructure and described it as an act of “terror,” accusing Moscow of attempting to weaken Ukrainian morale and disrupt logistics.
At the same time, Russia carried out a large-scale drone assault on the northern city of Chernihiv, where a series of explosions lit up the night sky, covering the city in thick smoke. Multiple fires broke out across residential and industrial areas, and emergency crews worked through the night to extinguish the flames. The attacks targeted several key power facilities, leaving around 50,000 residents without electricity. Ukrainian repair teams are currently working to restore power supplies.
Meanwhile, in eastern Ukraine, Russia intensified its offensive against the country’s energy infrastructure. An Iskander-M ballistic missile struck the Kramatorsk thermal power plant in Donetsk Oblast, a crucial energy hub for the region. The attack caused widespread blackouts in Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, and Sloviansk, disrupting both industrial operations and civilian utilities for hours.
Analysts view this latest assault as part of Russia’s pre-winter campaign aimed at crippling Ukraine’s energy grid and transport systems ahead of the cold season. By targeting electricity generation and heating facilities, Russia appears to be pursuing a strategy designed to pressure Ukraine both militarily and psychologically. Ukrainian officials have vowed to strengthen air defense capabilities and are urging Western allies to provide additional anti-air systems and energy support to counter what they describe as a new phase of intensified Russian attacks.
