Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, often known as the “Climate Girl,” has once again become the center of international controversy after being detained and deported by Israeli authorities while attempting to reach Gaza as part of a humanitarian aid flotilla. This marks the second time Thunberg has tried to reach Gaza by sea, only to be intercepted by Israeli forces. The incident has drawn intense media attention, particularly after she claimed that she and other activists were mistreated during their detention.
According to a report from the BBC on October 6, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Thunberg and 170 other international activists had been officially deported. Authorities stated that they departed from Ramon International Airport in southern Israel, flying to Greece and Slovakia. Photos released by the ministry showed Thunberg and the others wearing gray tracksuits and white T-shirts, under heavy security at the airport.
The deported individuals reportedly came from Greece, Italy, France, Ireland, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Austria, Luxembourg, Finland, Denmark, Slovakia, Switzerland, Norway, the United Kingdom, Serbia, and the United States. They were part of an “international aid flotilla” attempting to deliver food and medical supplies to civilians in Gaza but were stopped by the Israeli Navy before entering the restricted maritime zone.
After her release, Thunberg posted on social media, alleging that she and others were subjected to harsh treatment while in Israeli custody — including being denied water for hours, verbally abused, and psychologically intimidated. She wrote:
“This is not a misunderstanding or a side effect of war — it is systematic violence. Genocide is happening before our eyes, and no one can say they don’t know.”
Thunberg, who has long been an outspoken critic of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, has repeatedly accused the international community of turning a blind eye to Palestinian suffering. She called for the United Nations to investigate Israeli actions and demanded accountability for what she described as “crimes against humanity.”
In response, the Israeli Foreign Ministry rejected the allegations, stating that Thunberg and her group had illegally attempted to breach Israel’s maritime blockade, posing “a potential security threat.” Officials denied any mistreatment, accusing Thunberg of “politicizing the incident and spreading misleading information.”
The episode has triggered a divided reaction worldwide. Supporters praised Thunberg’s courage and moral stance, viewing her as a voice for justice and human rights. Critics, however, accused her of being biased and overly radical, arguing that she ignored Hamas’s role in the ongoing conflict.
Regardless of the controversy, the case has once again placed Greta Thunberg at the forefront of global debate — transforming her from a climate activist into a symbol of broader moral resistance, as the humanitarian and ethical crisis in Gaza continues to ignite passions across the world.
