Between October 9 and 10, 2025, Russia launched a new wave of massive airstrikes against Ukraine, firing over 465 drones and more than 30 missiles — including two “Kinzhal” hypersonic missiles. According to Ukrainian officials, about 420 aerial targets were intercepted, but the attack still caused widespread destruction to energy infrastructure, power outages, and civilian casualties, including the death of a 7-year-old child.

The strikes came just after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Donald Trump supported Ukraine’s right to strike Russian energy facilities. Following the bombardment, Kyiv and several major cities such as Zaporizhzhia experienced blackouts and power failures, plunging large areas into darkness. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba condemned the attack as a “deliberate act timed to coincide with the anniversary of Russia’s first large-scale assault on Ukraine’s energy grid in 2022,” calling on the international community to respond firmly.

A significant aspect of this latest offensive was Russia’s use of interceptor drones — unmanned systems designed to hunt down and destroy Ukrainian long-range strike drones. Russian forces reportedly deployed swarm tactics, complicating Ukraine’s ability to evade attacks and marking what analysts described as a “new and dangerous stage” in drone warfare. Ukrainian media noted that Russia has quickly adapted to Kyiv’s previous drone tactics, forcing Ukraine to revise its own strategies, such as flying at higher altitudes or integrating more advanced electronic warfare systems — adjustments that could substantially raise operational costs.

Internationally, the escalation has further reshaped military alignments. India announced the purchase of British-made LMM anti-drone missiles — the same model used by Ukrainian forces — in a $468 million deal, signaling a gradual move away from reliance on Russian weapons. Meanwhile, the United States is reportedly considering supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles, whose range could reach nearly 1,945 Russian military targets, a move that could significantly alter the strategic balance of the war.

On the battlefield, Ukraine’s top commander reported a “local turning point” near Dobropillia, though he acknowledged that Russian forces still maintain a manpower advantage. Ukraine is also grappling with severe morale and mobilization problems: over 110,000 soldiers have deserted since the beginning of 2025, while new recruits express fear of deployment and veteran troops suffer from physical and psychological exhaustion, further undermining the quality and sustainability of Ukraine’s military mobilization.
