Recently, the People’s Court of Zhashui County in Shaanxi Province released a criminal judgment revealing a shocking case that crossed the boundaries of marriage and ethics. The central figure, a woman in her 20s named He, engaged in an extramarital affair with Zheng, her former wedding’s best man, while her husband worked away from home for extended periods. The two lived together as a couple and had a child, ultimately being convicted of bigamy.
The events began in December 2019, when He officially married Cheng at the Zhashui County Civil Affairs Bureau, with Zheng serving as a best man witnessing the ceremony. After the marriage, Cheng spent long periods away from home to support the family financially, resulting in a long-distance marriage. This separation contributed to He’s gradual moral drift. From 2020 onward, she began an illicit relationship with Zheng, publicly presenting themselves as husband and wife despite her existing marriage.
In December 2022, the couple’s son was born, and Zheng signed delivery documents at the hospital as the “spouse,” effectively formalizing their illegal relationship. Shockingly, in February 2023, they held a public full-month celebration for the child at a local restaurant, attended by He’s relatives and Zheng’s father, completely disregarding Cheng’s legal status as her husband. This high-profile celebration eventually became a key piece of evidence in the case.
In March 2023, Zheng was imprisoned for illegal hunting, which forced the end of their bigamous relationship. Nevertheless, their actions had already crossed legal boundaries. The court concluded that both parties knowingly cohabited and had a child under the guise of being married, constituting bigamy.
This case not only exposes the limits of marital ethics but also serves as a stark reminder that marital fidelity and legal responsibilities cannot be violated without consequence.
