On the afternoon of October 18, 2025, a major fire broke out in the cargo area of Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The blaze lasted approximately seven hours, causing flight suspensions and severe damage to goods, with preliminary estimates of economic losses exceeding $1 billion USD.

The fire started at 2:15 PM local time in a warehouse within the airport’s cargo zone. Thick smoke quickly spread, forcing the airport to suspend operations for about seven hours. A total of 37 fire brigades, along with military personnel, were deployed to extinguish the flames, and the fire was brought under control by 9:18 PM. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The destroyed goods included garment raw materials, electronics, and chemical products, with direct losses estimated at approximately 3 billion RMB (around 30 billion Bangladeshi Taka). Because the incident occurred during the peak export season, combined with supply chain disruptions, the overall economic impact is expected to exceed $1 billion USD.

Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest garment exporter, with annual exports exceeding $40 billion USD. The fire destroyed cargo belonging to numerous small and medium-sized importers, pushing some companies toward bankruptcy and potentially affecting both the national economy and global supply chains.

Following the incident, airport operations resumed that same evening, although residual fire cleanup and damage assessments are still ongoing. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and have pledged to strengthen preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
